29 April, 2011 Motorola

Motorola Mobility is out on its own in the world Q1 of 2011 was its first quarter as an independent company. Its net revenue went up by a third year over year but Moto is still in the red. On the upside, the number of units shipped increased.

The Mobile Devices division of Motorola Mobility reported $2.1 billion net revenue for the first quarter of 2011, up 30% from last year first quarter. Moto shipped 9.3 million mobile devices, including 4.1 million smartphones and only 250,000 Motorola XOOM tablets. Last year those numbers were 8.5 million mobiles, only 2.3 million of which were smartphones .

However, this quarter Motorola Mobility posts an operating lossof $89 million better than the $192 million loss of last year Q1 and within expectations, but still a loss nontheless. The next quarter, they expect to at least break even and maybe make a small profit.

Motorola Mobility acquired a company that specializes in enterprise mobile security and device management for Android and plans to integrates the technology into their own smartphones and license it out to other makers.
