Sony Ericsson Ships 9 Million Android Phones

The fourth quarter financial results are in and its looking good, well sort of, for Sony Ericsson.

Ok lets start with the good news first. They have sold 9 million Android Xperia handsets since the first Xperia handset to use Android launched. Pretty impressive stuff, especially given the problems and bad publicity that arose from those handsets being saddled with a version of Android that was two generations out of date when the handsets launched.
Its important to note though that the 9 million figure quoted is for handsets sold to retailers, not to customers. Even so its still a pretty good sign for Sony Ericsson.

Moving onto the bad news the pre-tax profit for Q4 was a rather meagre 35 million euros. Ok so making 35 million quid is not exactly bad, but it did fall short of the market expectations. However, Sony Ericsson are putting a nice glossy shine on this by making the astute point that this still represents the fourth consecutive quarter that the company has actually turned a profit at all.
