Photos above is related of an upcoming LG smartphone. The device will reportedly be called LG Optimus U1 and will be the company first handset to run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As you probably know, the LG-owned telecom in Korea was recently renamed to U+ and U1 seems like a proper name for a smartphone that will be launched on it. Or it could all be a product of our wild imagination.

Galaxy S II

ATT has unveiled its first two LTE smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, a 4G-enabled version of the 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus Android smartphone, and the HTC Vivid. Hitting ATT stores from November 6, Galaxy S II Skyrocket will run Gingerbread 2.3.5 on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and pack an 8-megapixel main camera supporting 1080p HD video recording.

There is also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 16GB of internal storage to save photos and videos to. A microSD card slot allows for up to 32GB more to be added. Unlike the South Korean LTE versions of the Galaxy S II, the AT&T version’s display runs at the same WVGA of the original model, rather than using a Super AMOLED HD display like, say, the Galaxy Nexus.

As for the HTC Vivid, that will have a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel f2.2 28mm wide angle camera. It too will support 1080p HD recording, as well as include 16GB of internal storage.

Apple store app

Apple is readying a self-checkout update to its Apple Store iOS app, reports suggest, allowing shoppers to pick up and pay for accessories, peripherals and gadget cases in Apple Stores without needing any assistance from staff. The new retail store iOS app will charge purchases to a customer iTunes account, MacRumors sources say, while more expensive items such as Mac computers, iPhones and iPods will support pre-payment and require staff assistance to bring them out of the stock room.

The exact system for the new payments process has not been disclosed, though the iOS app is expected to email a receipt for each order in case you get stopped by security on the way out. Currently the app shows local store details, allows you to search through stock and then reserve it, but payment is taken by the existing in-store systems.

Facebook

Facebook for Windows Phone 7 just received an update that will allow the app to support Mango, or Windows Phone 7.5, new features. Now that Mango makes the WP7 experience feel a little more complete, it is good to see apps like Facebook a service most of us use with some frequency updated to support Mango live tiles and other integrated features.

"The update brings the software to version 2.2 and ads the ability to pin selected elements of the app, for example the Messages inbox, to your home screen.

The app also now supports toasts and tile notifications for a wide variety of events, including friend requests, messages, being tagged and other features."

Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia continues with the aggressive market campaign of its Windows Phone-running Lumia smartphones. The more expensive member of the duo, the Nokia Lumia 800, has just been pronounced the official smartphone of the UK X Factor talent show.

Each of the finalists got a brand new Nokia Lumia 800 and as you can you’ll see from some videos in a minute they really loved it. Given that Nokia is trying really hard to impress the younger audience, where most of the heavy smartphone users belong, you can see where this is coming from.

Sony and Samsung have been operating an LCD joint venture since 2004 called S-LCD. At this point Samsung holds 51-percent of the joint venture with Sony having 49-percent of S-LCD. Sony has not been doing well in the TV realm of late with loses in the segment that continue to increase. As a result of the mounting losses, Sony is said to be considering pulling out of the joint venture.

Sources are saying that if Sony does give up on the S-LCD venture that it would benefit the other large makers of LCD panels including CMI and AUO. Sources claim that Sony and Samsung are in talks about Sony stepping out of the venture and that the agreement for Sony exit will be complete by the end of 2011. Sony losses total $6 billion since the S-LCD venture was started.

Android

The Problem:

One of the best features of your Android is the capability of expanding your already large memory storage with an SD memory card or remote cloud storage services like Dropbox, Picasa, Google Docs, etc. The only problem is that managing all those gigabytes of information is not an easy task.

And as time goes by you may have duplicate documents, or worse one of your important files may end up in one of those forgotten folders that you never can find with very much ease. You can always restrict how much info you put on your Android, but that goes against the whole point of having an Android: eliminating all the dumb restrictions, rules, and barriers.

The Android Solution:

Scandisk

Picture

There is an app called Sandisk Memory Zone, that does a few very nifty things to help you organize all those gigabytes of information in a very easy and simple method. First of all, Sandisk Memory Zone organizes all the memory storage that you have access to on one simple screen to easily be able to see where you stand with all your memory.

Scandisk

Scandisk

Having all this information at the tip of your fingers, it is so much easier to decide when and where to save that file you are working on. If you think thats cool, we are just getting started! Sandisk Memory Zone allows you to access any of the files in any of the available storage devices/services from one single convenient access point. You can transfer them from one memory storage to another, and even password protect any of these files. Also don't forget to Watch the Video Below!

Nokia Connecting Hookers

Marketing people have a difficult job when it comes to naming their company products and services. They need to make sure that the branding they have thought up does not mean something offensive in a different language. Take for example Apple recent launch of the iPhone 4S. The highlight feature, Siri, translates to "ass" in Japanese. Likewise Gerber, the famous baby food brand in the United States, translates to "vomiting" in French. And in the Nordics Honda had to rename the Honda Fitta to the Honda Jazz, because Fitta is Swedish and Norwegian slang for vagina.

This is why handset makers like Nokia typically issue product names that are nothing more than a seemingly random string of digits. Two recent devices that Nokia have announced, the Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800, obviously have the prefix "Lumia" attached. In Finnish it means "snow", but in Spanish it unfortunately means "prostitute" according to MSNBC.

White Galaxy Note

Samsung Italy has reportedly confirmed which of the Korean company Android devices will receive an 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, with models such as the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 each supposedly in line for a 4.0 upgrade. The Italian arm of the firm listed the GSII and the Tab 10.1, along with the Galaxy NoteGalaxy Tab 8.9Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus as all being eligible for a tasty frozen treat. However, do not expect it any time soon.

According to the report, the updates will not begin until Q2,2012, potentially six months after Samsung Galaxy Nexus goes on sale. Samsung confirmed to us last night at the kick-off of the Galaxy Note European Tour that the oversized smartphone would get Android 4.0, as reported in our Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus hands-on, but said that, since the company had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.

iphone4 Siri

Apple disappointed many iPhone 4 owners with the news that Siri, the digital personal assistant technology, would only be available on the new iPhone 4S, and efforts quickly began to hack Siri onto the older smartphone. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith got the local app running with no problems, but faced Apple servers refusing to play ball with anything but the newest iPhone. Now, with the judicious application of some validation tokens from an iPhone 4S, its possible to get Siri on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch up and running, even without official support from Apple itself.

"It does require files from an iPhone 4S which are not ours to distribute, and it also requires a validation token from the iPhone 4S that has to be pulled live from a jailbroken iPhone 4S, and its about a 20-step process right now" Steve Troughton-Smith, developer

iPhone4 siri

Meanwhile, a second video has already demonstrated Siri running on the iPod touch 4, though in this case there are some hardware limitations. Thats around the iPod microphone, however, which is less sensitive than that of the iPhone 4/4S: Siri demands a strong, clear voice if its going to pick up any commands

Still, You should not expect to see a public release of this particular Siri hack any time soon!

Starting next month, Best Buy will price the 32GB TouchPad for 149.99USD when purchased with an HP or Compaq laptop, desktop, or all-in-one computer.

The HP TouchPad tablet sold out quickly during the fire sale following the announcement that it would be discontinued back in August. The $99 fire sale TouchPad tablets proved so popular that HP scheduled another production run of the tablets to fulfill backorders.

GoogleTV

The unpopular Google TV is back for another round with some new tricks up its sleeve. Launched exactly a year ago, Google TV failed to get the attention of buyers due to its many limitations, some of which Google intends to address in this update.

For starters, Google TV has now been updated to Android 3.1 Honeycomb. We would have praised it for running the latest version of Android had it launched a couple of weeks ago but that is no longer the case. This update also brings the ability access the Android Market. This may not be as exciting right now because the Google TV cannot work with all of the existing Android applications since they are designed to work with a touchscreen but developers can make new ones that are optimized for use on the TV and Google already has 50 developers on board to do just that.

GoogleTV
Also new to Google TV is a redesigned interface, which now puts more emphasis on your cable or satellite connection, arranging the shows in a new On TV tab, along with content from online sources such as Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon On Demand and YouTube.

BBM 6.0.1

RIM is rolling out an update to their signature instant messaging client, BlackBerry Messenger, which aims to spread BBM-connected apps in a few ways. There is now a menu item to open up the App World category which includes all applications that have some kind of BBM integration. When using those apps, content can be shared to other users even if they do not have the app. The update also enables sharing to BBM 5.0 users, including pointing friends to new apps, and chatting from within BBM-connected apps.

BBM Social, the development framework used by app-creators to plug into BlackBerry Messenger, is still a relatively unique proposition, and keeps RIM slightly ahead of the new breed of copycats, like iMessage.

There are currently about 500 employees working in the WebOS unit, but several top-level staff have recently left, which is a telling sign. Samsung

With the Samsung Galaxy S II having set the benchmark for hardware among Android smartphones, people are having very high expectations from the inevitable Galaxy S III. The rumors are that it will have a quad-core processor and while they may just have been baseless assumptions before it seems more of a reality now.

Samsung has just announced that they will be launching a new Exynos processor in 2012 that will use ARM big.LITTLE technology. So what is this big. The new Exynos processor will combine the new Cortex-A15 MPCore processor with the new Cortex-A7 MPCore processor on a single chip and will switch between the two as and when required.

The Cortex-A15 is the heavy lifter here and will be handling all the power hungry tasks whereas simpler tasks will be handles by the Cortex-A7. The Cortex-A7 is designed to be very power efficient, which means the device will be using 70% less power while running on the A7. Think of it as the Optimus Technology from NVidia, where it switches to a low power GPU when not doing graphics heavy task, except here both the processors will be on a single chip.

Android Device

The graphic (above) illustrates Android serious problem with the way it updates its devices. This comes after the company recently announced that Nexus One users will notbe getting upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The chart demonstrates the major problem with the Android ecosystem. The motivations of the carriers and manufacturers are obvious, which are short term gains and keeping customers by locking them into proprietary overlays. Discussing this matter further, DeGusta says on his site:

"It appears to be a widely held viewpoint3 that there is no incentive for smartphone manufacturers to update the OS: because manufacturers don’t make any money after the hardware sale, they want you to buy another phone as soon as possible. If that’s really the case, the phone manufacturers are spectacularly dumb: ignoring the 2 year contract cycle & abandoning your users isn’t going to engender much loyalty when they do buy a new phone."

Google TV

Even though Logitech had tried to play it cool when its Revue boxes claimed to ship with the Google TV update pre-installed, the cat is officially out of the bag this time. The update for Google TV is on its way and should land on existing hardware early next week.

The newest version of Google TV will bring a nicely revamped user interface that may make it almost enjoyable to use. The update cleans up most of everything, offering up an easier way to navigate through menu options and a handful of new features. A new addition that should please many is the introduction of HBOGo, which should beat the hell out of having to use the web browser to access the site.

The most exciting new feature for Google TV is that the Android Market will now be available. Of course, we are still up in the air as to how nice it will be, as there likely won’t be too many applications optimized for larger screen sizes but we can imagine that will change going forward. Since the latest update is built off of Android 3.1 Honeycomb, there should at least be a few interesting applications to take advantage of out of the box.

ITG

ITG has not given up on its xpPhone endeavor and now they have announced a revamped version called the xpPhone 2. It too, like its predecessor, runs Windows as its main operating system, but this time its the more modern Windows 7 and when its ready to come out Windows 8, too.

Yep, this xpPhone 2 wants to be taken seriously, something the original couldn't achieve, and its effort to do so are clearly visible in its hardware department. Just like the original xpPhone, the xpPhone 2 rocks a QWERTY keyboard, but unlike its predecessor features a slimmer, 140mm x 73mm x 17.5mm body. However, it still looks ridiculous for a 2011 device.

As to the improvements under the hood, the xpPhone 2 features a dead-end 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor and 2GB of RAM, which shouldn't give you any headaches running the aforementioned operating systems. Its display measures at 4.3-inch diagonal, but it remains to be seen what its resolution will be, as Windows 8 is said to require at least 1024 x 768 at minimum. And to be honest, we can't quite figure out who would prefer this wanna-be-a-tablet-and-smartphone instead of a full-fledged tablet running Windows 8 natively.

The first set-top box with Google TVinstalled has suffered from sluggish sales and an eventual price slash to 99USD to help move units. Still, what most people have been waiting for is the Android 3.1 update and the introduction of the Android Market. Well, it looks like some of the newer boxes of the Revue now claim to have both, pre-installed.

While it may not make sales of the device skyrocket, the Android 3.1 update should prove to be a pretty decent one. The UI will be revamped and allow for widgets, but the Android Market is by far the most exciting feature on the way. While there may not be many applications to use out of the box, its a step in the right direction and I hopefully I can justify my $99 purchase for the thing.

We've already seen a couple of builds of the upcoming update but they require rooting the device to get them installed, which isn't as easy as rooting your everyday Android phone. If the new boxes have been shipped with the latest update, we should expect a OTA for existing units some time in the near future.

Nokia lumia

The Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 were both present so we could check out how those 1.4Ghz Snapdragon chipsets fare.

To put their performance into perspective we threw in the HTC Radar and an HTC 7 Mozart running the Mango update into the mix. The Radar has a chipset very similar to the two Lumia smartphones, but its Scorpion CPU is clocked at 1GHz. It should show us what kind of an advantage the extra 400MHz of clock speeds actually bring. The 7 Mozart not only has a slower CPU than the two Nokia smartphones, but also a weaker GPU so we will see how much of a difference that makes.

We started with BrowserMark and it was Nokia Lumia 710 that drew first blood, scoring 32,854 points. The Lumia 800 came in second with 32,594 points, but for all purposes practical the performance of the two was identical. The HTC Radar came in third and HTC 7 Mozart ended up last with the margin of their defeat being about what the specs difference suggests.

Nokia lumia

Nokia 800 Lumia evened the score by winning the second benchmark, Microsoft’s FishIE Tank. It delivered 53 fps compared to 50fps of the Lumia 710. The HTC Radar was some way behind with 38fps, while the less powerful GPU of the 7 Mozart only allowed it to do 30fps.

Nokia lumia

The Lumia 800 scored another point at the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark and once again the Lumia 710 came so close that the two were virtually indistinguishable. The HTC smartphones got very similar results here, but neither of them came anywhere near the Lumia scores. Thats all understandable considering given the nature of the benchmark.

Nokia lumia

The final test was Celtikcane JSBenchmark and the Nokia Lumia 800 made it three wins out of four. The Lumia 710 did not disappoint either and came a really close second, while the Radar placed third 25% off the pace. The 7 Mozart was nearly two times slower than the leader.

Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President of Markets for Nokia, said the following in an interview:

"When you look within the Windows Phone ecosystem and compare how the Lumia performs, there we have a contractual agreement with Microsoft for a certain amount of engineering which we can use for differentiation. However, we have to be very careful on how we use that one because we cannot fragment the developer ecosystem. If that starts forking, that’s not useful at all. We made the decision to go to Windows Phone when Mango was pretty much done, so we were able to impact some elements of it but you’ll really see the fruits of what we can do with Microsoft when the Apollo version of Windows Phone comes out."

Facebook Data center

Facebook latest data center is being built in North Carolina and the next one will built closer to the North Pole.

The company confirmed Thursday that it plans to build a server center in Lulea, Sweden, about 60 miles outside of the Arctic Circle. The new center will be Facebook first outside of the United States.

Facebook told the Associated Press that the cool climate of Lulea which in summer months rarely sees temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit is one reason for the decision to build a data center there. Cooler outside air temperatures make it less expensive to keep servers from overheating.

The new facility, which is scheduled to be completed by 2014, will consist of three 300,000-square-foot server buildings and be powered entirely by nearby hydropower stations.

P9981

That blocky-looking BlackBerry Bold we saw last month has just been officially announced in India. As suspected, its a luxury do-over of the 9900, branded by Porsche. Aside from having a unique PIN starting 2AA, a custom-sculpted exterior, and an exclusive UI theme, the BlackBerry P'9981 has the same 5 megapixel camera without autofocus, 2.8-inch 640 x 480 touchscreen, OS 7, and 1.2 GHz processor.

Porsche has not pumped out a phone in awhile, and even then, their handsets tended to be feature phones with an excessive amount of attention put into the casing. While the Bold 9900 certainly is not the top-of-the-line in the smartphone world, its certainly passable, and likely a familiar face for the high rollers that tend to buy luxury phones. We have seen a fewgaudy after-market BlackBerry devices in the past, but this is the first time we have seen RIM partner up with a big-name brand to produce a luxury smartphone.

Sony is indeed taking full control of Sony Ericsson. With this acquisition Sony will not be just the sole owner, but will also take ownership of five wireless technology patent families.

Sony and Ericsson have also entered into a cross-licensing agreement for a broad intellectual property, but there is nothing more beyond that. Ericsson will receive €1.05 billion as part of the deal.

Nexus one

Google original Nexus One will not get an official upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, it has been confirmed, with only the Nexus S getting the latest version of the smartphone platform. While the Nexus S will get updated "within weeks" of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) going live, Google Hugo Barra confirmed to the Telegraph, the exec admitted that the Nexus One hardware was simply too old to support the new OS.

"The operating system is thought through with the needs of the next three years in mind its a wholesale revamp of the way people interact with the phone" Barra said of ICS, something that will come as cold comfort to Nexus One owners whose device was only announced in January 2010. Many will still be within their original two-year contract, forced to watch later Nexus adopters who picked up the Nexus S after it was launched at the end of December.

BB pay

It seems like the future is happening today, as RIM has announced that the Blackberry Bold 9900 and the Blackberry Curve 9360 are the first ever SIM-totting NFC smartphones to be certified as MasterCard PayPass approved devices.

This means that both Blackberries have met the various security, interoperability and functionality requirements set by MasterCard and can now be used to pay at various NFC enabled stores around the world. The way any MasterCard PayPass-issuing bank globally will be able to connect your MasterCard to your SIM card in either the Bold 9900 or the Curve 9360.

playbook

Those of you itching to get your hands on the upcoming PlayBook OS update will have to wait until 2012, RIM says, and even then, it will be without stand-alone BlackBerry Messenger support. The first glimpse of OS 2.0 for RIM tablet is offering up an Android App Player, but there is still a lot more to add, like stand-alone e-mail, and other native productivity apps like calendar, contacts, and memopad.

Beyond that, a recent customer survey indicates that RIM looking at DLNA support, using a BlackBerry smartphone as a mouse/keyboard, more use of the LED indicator, and the addition of two-way Stereo Bluetooth in future PlayBook updates. The next batch of BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 betas are going out to businesses registered with RIM Early Adopter Program, so they can presumably test enterprise management software.

BBX colt

Not long ago RIM announced its new BBX platform and the BBX OS for smartphones and tablets. We have already seen the a glimpse of the new platform in the Playbook, but what all BlackBerry loyal users expect to see is this new OS on a smartphone.

RIM has had unsatisfying sales and even some issues with its servers lately, so it is not among everybody favorites right now.

BlackBerry Colt will look much like the Torch 9860, but without the hardware keys. Its said to be thinner than the Bold 9900 and with the same stainless steel unibody. Note that the device in the picture is most probably a mockup, but should be very close to the truth.

The Colt is supposed to pack a dual-core processor, a 4.xx inches of display with 900px+ vertical resolution, front and rear cameras, similar battery as the one in the Playbook and TAT UI elements throughout the BBX OS.

Nokia N9

Unlike them, however, the white N9 will come with a glossy finish rather than the matte finishes of the other N9 models. We are glad the white finish did not took Nokia years to develop because it looks stunning. Here is Frank Zilikens, head of product marketing, explaining why the N9 was not available in white on the first:

"The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers."

Nokia Bendable phone

Flexible displays and devices seem to be the holy grail of mobile technology, as you can have the power and connections we all expect but have the ability to warp the shape into anything thats most convenient. While we have seen flexible displays before, the prototypes Nokia was showing at its Nokia World 2011 conference were pretty freaking mind blowing.

The company was showing off multiple Nokia Kinetic devices, working portable electronics that can be bent and twisted but still work. One device looked like a large touchscreen slate phone but you could bend it to scroll through music and photos. This is definitely a prototype device but one could easily see phone capabilities being thrown into there one day.

The other Nokia Kinetic device could take pictures and display them in its elongated teardrop shape. The plastic sturdiness of its casing meant that you could drop it on the ground or bend it and it would still work. A representative even said you could wash it under the tap and it would not hinder the device usability.

Chrome web store

Just like the Android Market a few months back, Google has updated the Chrome Web Store with a new design that mirrors the square shapes of the new Android Market.

The new look Chrome Web Store looks radically different from its predecessor and I must say is incredibly attractive. And its not just a fancy design as well but also very functional. For example, you can mouseover an app and it will quickly shows a description and a download button, which instantly starts the download without opening another page.

The main page scrolls infinitely and you can see a list of categories on the left that remains fixed even as you scroll. You also have a search bar on the top left. As you enter categories, you will see breadcrumbs appear on the top bar. On the right you have your settings and an option to view your downloaded apps. This shows all the apps you have downloaded so far and not just the apps that are installed currently on your system, so you can just visit this link when you set up Chrome on a new computer and install all your apps from here without having to remember their names.

Spotify has released a mobile app for MeeGo, allowing those lucky few with a Nokia N9 to access the streaming music service. The app which also works on the N950 developer device supports streaming over WiFi, EDGE and 3G, as well as support for offline playlists where tracks are cached in the N9 own storage for playback when you are without a data connection.

The N9 already comes preloaded with access to Nokia Ovi Music store, allowing paid downloads on a per-track or per-album basis. However, Spotify relies on a subscription, a single monthly payment 9.99USD or 9.99EURO granting access to the company full catalog of streamed tracks.

Nokia 800

We are less than 24 hours away from the official announcement of the Nokia 800 Sun (or Lumia if you will), so what could be better than a few leaked photos to warm things up. That's exactly what we got as a couple of live shots of the pink version of the WP Mango-running smartphone surfaced.

Nokia 800

Obviously, the Nokia 800 Sun will not only borrow the design of the Nokia N9, but the color versions too. Just like its sibling, the Sun will come in black, blue and pink and it should also feature the same non-painted color polycarbonate unibody, which handles scratches greatly.

The only design differences between the Nokia Windows Phone and MeeGo flagships remain the shutter key and the three capacitive touch buttons on the front that the Nokia 800 has.

Since the official announcement of Google latest and greatest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich last week, the update timeline for the current crop of Android devices has been a seriously hot topic of discussion. Motorola is among the first major players to spill the beans on the matter via its own Twitter feed.

As you can see above, the tech giant vows to update its flagship devices within six weeks of Google release of the final version of the OS. Sure, the tweet does say they will release "devices for ICS" but since it's an answer about upcoming updates, we guess it's just a typo and what they really meant was "ICS for devices".

And since Google widely expected to release the source code shortly after the Galaxy Nexus goes on sale, we can look at January 2012 as the likely time of the update.

Now, though, they get the chance to taste some of the Anna-brought extras. In SW updates v. 60.0.003 and V.40.0.003 for the Nokia 5800 and 5530 respectively, Nokia has updated the old browser to the new, Symbian Anna one (v. 7.3.1.33). International domain name support as well as support for non-ASCII characters have also been added.

As many HTC devices as possible is what HTC is saying they are going to try to update to Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming weeks or at least thats what they have got in mind. This week has been both the formal introduction to Ice Cream Sandwich as a final build and a showing of the hero device for this version of Android, and now HTC wants in on the party with an announcement on their plans for the immediate future. Through their Facebook page they let the world know the basics about upgrading a device to a new version of Android as well as what they basically have in mind for how they are going to do it and how many devices they’re going to do it to.

HTC spoke in generalities for the most part today saying that they are "looking closely" at the new operating system features and functionality so that they might further determine their plans for upgrading all of their devices. They note that they are an "industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades" to their Android devices and that this version, Android 4.0, will be no different.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that has quite a few people heard about its ability to hide applications that you would otherwise not be able to get rid of. These apps are generally calls pre-installed because they are added to the basic build of the device and cannot be deleted by the user What this new function will bring is the ability to shut these apps out of your device ALMOST entirely save for the amount of space they take up in a very rudimentary sense. What you might not know is that both the Motorola DROID RAZR and the DROID BIONIC both have this ability already no Ice Cream Sandwich required!

Before we continue, I must disclose that I have not had an extended time with the DROID BIONIC if you will take a look at the reviews here and over at the other site I have reviewed for in the past, Android Community, you’ll see that it was Vincent Nguyen and Cory Gunther who took that review on when the device dropped.

iphone3gs

With the iPhone 3GS now available for free with new cell phone contracts, the 3GS has been on the market for more than two years, eclipsed by the iPhone 4 and then the iphone 4S. Turns out the answer is an emphatic yes, according to ATT.

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a statement that the iPhone 4S is selling like hotcakes. But in a discussion with analysts to talk about AT&T most recent financial report, de la Vega is also very positive about the contributions Apple iPhone 3GS continues to make to his company bottom line.

De la Vega said:

I also mentioned in my notes that we have another device that I think is going to dramatically change those people that are on smartphones and quick messaging devices, the 3GS, which is free with a 2-year contract. We have seen a tremendous, tremendous demand for that device even though it’s a generation old. And actually, we’re getting more new subscribers coming on the 3GS on the average than other devices. So we also have an inventory sold out on that device. So I’m very, very optimistic on what the fourth quarter is going to look like in terms of smartphone growth.

Now that the iPhone 4S is out of the way, its time to speculate on Apple iPad 3. According toMacotakara, a "reliable Asian source" is saying that Apple will release the next-gen tablet about a year after the iPad 2, marking a debut no earlier than March 2012. And from leaked shots of alleged iPad 3 components, it appears that Apple will equip the new iPad with a smaller dock connector.

The most common rumor so far surrounding the iPad 3 is that Apple will use a higher resolution Retina Display. Back in July, there were tips from the supply side suggesting that Apple was preparing an iPad 2 Plus, or an a more advanced version of the tablet with 1080p HD capabilities for late 2011. Another iPad by year-end seems doubtful given Apple usual product patterns, but a higher resolution display on the iPad 3 seems likely.

And now, the refresh could launch in early November, although some tips suggest that it could arrive as soon as next week. So if you are in the market for a new MacBook Pro, best to hold off for a bit to get the latest internals.

The refreshed MacBook Pro is expected to look the same externally but it will sport faster processors with the latest Intel Sandy Bridge chips. Intel recently refreshed with a new Core i7 line thats been clocked much higher than current processors. The latest 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz, and 2.7GHz could replace the 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz, and 2.3GHz processors in the current 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros.

Android ICS

With the release of Ice Cream Sandwich couple of day ago every Android device now feels old and outdated. Fortunately, a developer managed to get the tasty Android 4.0 running on the Nexus One.

The successful Ice Cream Sandwich installation is actually an SDK port and while it may not have everything running buttery smooth, its a huge step forward towards bringing Android 4.0 to modern Android devices.

Sprint

While a UPS shipment order is only for a poster of the handset, we could only imagine that Sprint must be gearing up with Galaxy Nexus marketing materials. With Verizon essentially confirmed and ATT and T-Mobile versions likely on their way, adding Sprint to the carrier lineup is just icing on the cake.

When Samsung launched the Galaxy Nexus sign-up page, it showed seven possible carriers to choose from. This certainly does not mean we are going to see the handset launch on the likes of US Cellular or Cellular South, but more to gauge consumer demand. This is exactly what was said at the announcement. Still, we hope that Samsung and Google had already decided to blanket the US with the Galaxy Nexus and make it available on all four major carriers in the first place.

Galaxy Nexus

Looks like the  Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be making an appearance in a 4G LTE form.

Samsung and Google Unpacked Event in Hong Kong brought the next evolutionary step of Android to the fore. Two key announcments of course came out of the event, the coming of Android 4.0, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, and a vessel with which to carry it into the market, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

In the US, users of Verizon and their LTE network will be able to pick a compatible version of the new Galaxy Nexus, we are assured, before the end of this year 2011.

Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus

Even more choices and options, or at least thats what Samsung seems to think. Today the company announced the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus for the US, which officially puts the Galaxy Tab tablet count to just over head-spinning. Complementing the 8.9 and 10.1 versions, the 7.0 Plus is more like its newer siblings versus its predecessor Galaxy Tab from last fall.

penTile matrix

Despite the 720p resolution on the Galaxy Nexus, the device actually is not packing a Super AMOLED Plus, but a regular Super AMOLED screen. Those of you that have been paying more attention would even know what the main difference between the two is that the "Plus" AMOLED uses a conventional 3-subpixel-per-pixel RGB matrix, while the regular one goes by with 2-subpixel-per-pixel RGBG PenTile matrix.

Galaxy Nexus

So the Samsung Galaxy Nexus should come with one of those PenTile matrices, Well, as our macro shots showed yes. The question remains if that really matters here.

As you can see from the close-up photo of the Galaxy Nexus display, each of its pixels consists of a green sub-pixel and either a double-sized blue or a double-sized red sub-pixels. So even if the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has higher pixel count than any other smartphone on the market its sub-pixel count is identical to that of the iPhone 4S/4 Retina.

Posche

Porsche Design themselves are no stranger to mobile phone designs and their whole range of products have a crisp, clean, heavily engineered feel to them, but never before have we seen them flex their creative muscles on a smartphone, especially with a high-profile company like RIM as their partner.

The two known mobile creations to have come out of the Porsche Design house previously, were theSagem P9521 Porsche and Sagem P9522 Porsche, the former being a clamshell block of brushed metal and the latter being a sophisticated looking bar phone. There was another hint of Porsche Design that stepped into the smartphone world, however this concept came courtesy of industrial designer, André Silva. Still, the concept, dubbed P9530 Smartphone, got people attention and demonstrated the potential of what a design house such as Porsche Design could achieve if they ever decided to take on an all-screen smartphone brief, such as the one from Silva designs.

Back to the real deal however, the 'Porsche-Berry'/Knight/9980, depending on which you prefer, is set to launch at a special event on October 27th in Dubai.

Dragon

Nuance is out with the Dragon Recorder iOS app, allowing its Dragon customers to use an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch as a voice recorder to capture their own voice, and then transcribe the recordings into any application on the Mac or PC with Dragon speech recognition. According to the official press release, more than half of Nuance current Dragon customers have requested a way to use their smartphones to capture their thoughts on the go.

In that sense, the iOS app is just a start and we expect to see the application hitting other platforms like Android and Windows Phone in the near future.

iPad2

Earlier this week a video appeared ans shows how easy it is to access Siri on the iPhone 4S despite the device being locked. Its a very easy problem to fix, just change a setting, but by default your iPhone 4S is open.

Now we have got another "security flaw" appearing but this time with the Apple iPad 2. Turns out that you can easily get access to the last application opened by simply using an official Apple Smart Cover. Similar to the Siri security oversight, you can prevent your iPad 2 from being compromised by changing a setting, but by default Apple left you out in the open and vulnerable to those who want to mess with you.

Apple Siri is the flagship features of the iPhone 4S, but Dexetra came up with Iris for Android, a reversal of the Siri name, and pulling together Android existing voice input and text-to-speech capabilities with some online search and a dash of arch humor.

Unfortunately, Iris speedy construction means there are still some rough patches, and in a brief trial this morning I had more problems than I did with Siri. It started well: asking "What is Android?" brought back a potted definition from online, read out loud to you, then asking what time it was in Hong Kong pulled up the time, though Android text-to-speech mangled the numbers.

Android Market Movie

Google added the ability to rent films to the Android Market for Android users in the US back in July. If you were outside the US, the only thing you could do was hack the app that plays the films to allow you to watch. If you are not the hacking sort, Google has now announced that movie rentals are officially available in the UK.

Movie fans in the UK will have 1,000 films to watch to begin with and they will start at a price of £2.49 each. For that price, the user will get 30 days to watch the film and the movie will be available on any connected device the user logs into. That means the user Android smartphone, tablet, and even the computer can be used to watch the movie.

Windows 8 tablet

NVIDIA president Jen-Hsun Huang has warned Microsoft not to position Windows 8 on ARM as PCs, arguing that tablets should be the company first focus. The outspoken CEO described his argument as coming from "a finesse perspective" in an interview with AllThingsD, and a hope that Microsoft puts its software emphasis on bringing full Office support to the ARM-based version of the platform. "That would be the killer app" Huang reckons.

Everything else is on the web. As we have already seen, in our preview of Windows 8 on tablets, the platform does a solid job of integrating the browser into the normal workflow, as well as allowing multiple pages to be juggled and simultaneously viewed on a touchscreen-only device.

Huang obviously has a vested interest in Windows 8 being tablet-centric from the start. NVIDIA chips are currently inside around 70-percent of the non-iPad tablet market, and he said he would definitely be open to powering future Apple iPads too.

Galaxy Nexus

The presence of a barometer inside the Galaxy Nexus raised some eyebrows, even though the Motorola Xoom has had that feature for a while now. People seemed to be having a hard time wrapping their head around the idea of having a barometer in a phone.

So to put this matter to rest and for the people to stop talking about it so much, Google Dan Morril posted on his Google+ account the answer to why the Galaxy Nexus has a barometer.

The answer is simple. The barometer helps the GPS to get a quicker lock on. Here’s Dan Morril explaining it in detail.

The primary purpose of the barometer is (at least, I’ve been told) to make GPS lockons faster. Locking on to a GPS involves numerically solving a 4-dimensional set of linear equations — 3 dimensions in space, and time. (Yes, you get accurate time for free if you lock on to GPS.) Because of the way GPS works, this can take a few minutes.

This goes much faster if you already have an estimate of your location. This is why “aGPS” (assisted GPS) services are so popular: by starting with a rough city-level coordinate fix through something like cell-tower network location, you can reduce the amount of math you have to do to lock on. This is where the barometer comes in.

The 3 dimensions in space are latitude, longitude… and altitude. The barometer gives you a reasonable first-cut estimate for altitude. This gives you a bit of a leg up on one of the dimensions — especially combined with “2D” aGPS — which can help speed up lock-on in general.

Now of course, the barometer can also be used for things like, well, determining atmospheric pressure (although I’m not sure it’s really weather grade.) But the main reason it’s in your phone is to help with GPS.

ARM

Cambridge-based mobile microchip industry crunching firm ARM has announced its A7 chip and the "big.LITTLE" processing to the world this week, and you already knew that from yesterday. What you might not have known, or perhaps realized, is that with A7 architecture in smart device, ARM is suggesting that a whole new generation of devices is on the way that will be below $100, this allowing large groups of people from the still without-smartphones world to join in on the fun.

We learned about the new A7 chip earlier this week and how it will provide not only similar performance to the chips currently sitting inside devices such as the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy Nexus, but at a much lower cost in both cash to produce and power to run. ARM notes that inside the next two years, high-end smartphones will be bumping up to A15 architecture, this allowing much higher performance, but w ill not exactly work out so well for current battery technology.
