The Verizon flagship Android device The Droid X is not the only handset in danger of taking some damage from this one, though this thing is a near one-to-one match with the Sprint EVO 4G, both in looks and specs. But there is something better coming... it is the EVO 4G. For Verizon. Thats not its official name but in fact, it does not appear to have an official name just yet. But it does have an 8 megapixel camera, the Evo signature kickstand, a 4.3-inch screen and front face camera.

apple

Apple have announced that they are severing ties with SurfaceInk, an engineering design company Apple has worked alongside for a decade. The reason for this departure is pretty basic, Apple sees SurfaceInk as a competitor, or at the very least as aiding their competitors in the nascent tablet computing market. SurfaceInk has just developed its own prototype for a tablet device and is working with companies such as HP, which is rumoured to be releasing its own webOS powered tablet device either late this year or early next year. All of this won\'t be sitting well with El Jobso of course.

The New York Times spoke with Eric Bauswell, SurfaceInk CEO, about the parting of ways:

Mr. Bauswell declined to give details of its relationship with Apple, citing client confidentiality agreements. But he said that his company was let go because of "Apple’s growing awareness of our turnkey capabilities" referring to SurfaceInk business of designing products for its clients. "I think they view our capabilities as an opportunity for competitors" he said.

Enter Rockchip to the arena with their promise of delivering a 3D enabled tablet device that requires no glasses to use. The nice thing about Rockchip design is that it is dual purpose, you can switch between 3D and 2D modes so you are not saddled with something trying to push a particular feature that you might not use, rather you get a tablet device that has 3D tech for when you feel it will be worth using.

The bad news is that the tablet is still in the prototype stage so chances are that it won't be making it onto a store shelf any time soon. However, Rockchip do have plans to build an Android powered tablet using this technology, the idea probably being that a bigger, more well known brand, will re-badge the tablet and sell it.

iphone

Early Yesterday, the iPhone Dev Team (the guys behind the discovery of the vast majority of iPhone jailbreak methods) announced that they will not be working on a jailbreak for iOS 4.0.2.

Why? Because with iOS 4.0.2, Apple showed that they are willing to push out updates that do nothing but patch the exploits used for jailbreaking. It is by all means reasonable, especially in this case; the browser-based (and thus easily forced on unknowing users) exploit patched in 4.0.2 could be used for all sorts of nasty things beyond jailbreaking, so Apple had plenty of reasons to drop everything and patch it up.

If the cat and mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits.  For this reason, there will not be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release.  At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don’t count on that).

We all hope to get it ASAP to unlock any New iPhone4 device!

I love leaks. I love the idea that some mole inside an organisation smuggled out some classified document, or stole a few secret moments with an upcoming product and a low-quality camera. I envision dramatic escapes, top-level inquiries, blackmail, villains, and robo-ninjas. Sometimes, though, there are product leaks that donot require a mole.

HTC

Nothing quite stokes gadget geeks like a good old fashioned rumour so here we go ... HTC are perhaps maybe possibly working on a new Android superphone ... or it might be a tablet. The confusion and doubt comes about through a lack of any substantial information except for a name, a model number and the bare bones of a specifications list.

The product in question is being called the HTC Merge and it will allegedly be running with a processor with a clock speed in excess of 1 GHz and pack in a 10 MP camera. The handset was spotted in a Global Certification Forum filing as well as on American network Verizon's database. The name 'Merge' maybe a clue as to the identity of the handset with some wondering whether it hints at a tablet rather than a phone or possibly some sort of hybrid a le the Dell Sreak.

What is known is that it has the model number ADR6325 and that it will be running Android. The fact that it is on Verizon's database would also suggest that it will support CDMA and be launched on that network at some point. It does also support GSM frequencies though so perhaps it will be a global handset or maybe even just a re-working of an existing handset like the Desire HD.

MeeGo

Below is a quick video showing some great content that you’ll be able to access on the Droid.

The New HTC Windows phone 7 has just been approved by the FCC in Europe and may support the US-compatible WCDMA or EV-DO the only reason it's in here is to cover EDGE 850 / 1900 plus 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth. Considering how HTC's been operating as of late.

26 August, 2010 Nokia

Nokia cannot keep information on new models before their announcement. Some view it as good PR and moves calculated for effect. Unfortunately, the naked truth is easier to understand: no top manager can control events in the company and the number of leaks increases year after year irretrievably. The amount of information already available about Nokia C7 makes this model well known and devoid of any novelty.

In the smartphone lineup from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia C7-00 (hereinafter referred to as C7) occupies a special place. It is the second smartphone on Symbian^3 to go on sale. Such models will be offered in abundance at the end of 2010 and in 2011. They will coexist with old fashioned handsets on Symbian^1 (S60 5th Edition). The company views Nokia N8 as the flagship and all promotion efforts will be concentrated on this model, but Nokia C7 will sell better due to lower price and will prove that cameras in phones are not so important for average consumers. Why Nokia C7 will attract the attention of people? The answer is simple. It is Nokia N8 in a different body with a lower price.

The screen looks familiar. It is the one used in other Nokia models, such as the X6. It has the resolution of 640x360 pixels, 3.5-inches, covered with glass (that is what the special plastic identical to that of the X6 becomes called) and allows up to 16 million colors. It is based on AMOLED, which however shouldn't be compared to Samsung's Super AMOLED, those are two different technological generations. The Nokia N8 screen is comparable to the one in the Nexus One and is even superior to the latter in direct sunlight; the picture quality is comparable indoors. On the whole, the AMOLED screen is not that much of an advantage; the picture is similar to X6, albeit better in terms of the color range. The difference is not that apparent (probably, due to the interface icons and design). It becomes clearer when browsing through the pictures.

The phone features 135 MB of memory dedicated to common applications or your data. The internal memory of 8 GB can be extended by microSD memory cards of up to 32 GB. The handset also has 256 MB of RAM (Nokia N97 Mini has 128 MB), which is a great leap forward for Nokia.

BL-5K battery has the capacity of 1200 mAh and offers up to 390 hours in the standby mode and from 5.5 to 12 hours of talk time (UMTS/GSM).

In USB settings you can choose one of the following 3 modes:

  • Data Storage (Mass Storage USB) – the phone memory and memory cards are detected; no drivers required and the OS recognizes the handset without additional help.
  • OVI Suite – work with OVI Suite, access to all phone features, back up of all data, etc.
  • Printing & Media – photo printing, MTP regime.

Data transfer speed reaches 5.5 Mb/s. When USB cable is connected the phone starts recharging.

T-moble G2

Based on a tweet by Cyanogen, the G2 is not going to be sporting another rehash of the Snapdragon family of chipsets that has come to dominate HTC devices for the past 6 months.

You may remember back in November of 2009 that Qualcomm demoed an updated family of chipsets for mobile multimedia devices. The name of that chipset is the remarkably catchy MSM7X30, and it is bringing a little more to the table than its predecessors. its known that the G2 would be shipping with HSPA+ connectivity.but thats only one of the goodies Qualcomm upgraded chipset will be offering:

  • 720P video encoding and decoding at 30FPS
  • Integrated 2D/3D GPU’s with OpenGL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 API support
  • 5.1 surround sound output
  • Up to 12 megapixel camera support
  • Integrated GPS
  • Support for processor speeds between 800MHz and 1GHz

Skyfire It is the smartphone browser that was chewing through Flash video and other rich media long before any of the built-in browsers were supporting such things. What the iPhone 4 Really Needs a browser with rich Media supporting as Adobe Flash... As Skyfire always connecting to Flash and always support rich media websites and skyfire stick with this mission to bring people all they need in one browser Easy, Fast and very free! So it may be mean that iPhone 4 May get Flash support with the iOS4 Skyfire browser but their is No confirmation yet

It is by no means official just yet, but a pair of much-trusted little birdies have just informed me that SkyFire has just entered the final testing phase of what they intend to be the first public iPhone build, with plans to submit to Apple early next week.

Do you Remember the Ugly Concept phone fro Motorola that Named Moto (Kope)... we thought its just an idea but it was not as Some Real photos (Blurry photos) of this kope has leaked all over the web which confirms its a real phone called the Motorola MB520. Namely, it will ship with Android 2.1 and (Moto custom Android skin) Blur, but a 2.2 (aka Froyo) update will be available over-the-air.

Internally, it is also being called (Diablo), but there’s still no retail name available just yet. Speaking of retail availability, there is still no word on release date, but as I said the other day it is bound for ATT.

Waaaay back in June, Sony announced their mid-range Xperia X8, and it came similar to their Top Phone Xperia X10, X10 mini, X10 pro

Well, now the diminutive fellow has had his required appointment with the FCC, so release should be on the horizon soon just maybe not in time for the original Q3 2010 release date.

The X8 has a 600MHz processor, 3.0 inch 320×480 screen, 3.2MP camera, 3.5mm headset jack, 2GB included MicroSD card, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth (with stereo A2DP), and Sony uniqiue twist on the Android UI. It will ship with Android 1.6, but upgradeable to Android 2.1 in june!

LG

The rumored LG E900 was caught on highly blurry video a few days back and but now, thanks to that shot of pretty decent quality, we can finally get an idea what to expect. Still, the E900 features remains a mystery which, however, should be solved soon.

The first devices based on the Windows Phone 7 platform are expected in October so it's not strange that we spot more and more of them in the wild even if none has been officially unveiled yet. Today's addition to the list of rumored WP7 phones is the LG E900.

Apple Event

Apple are gearing up for a media event on 7th September rin San Francisco. The event will almost certainly revolve around the launch of a new TV show rental service the company is launching according to Bloomberg. The event should also see the launch of a new iPod Touch with higher resolution screen and a new version of Apple TV.

The TV rental service would let Apple customers rent a TV programme for $0.99 and programming should be available from Fox and ABC as well as Disney, of which Steve Jobs is a board member and the single largest shareholder in. The other two big American networks, NBC and CBS, are also said to be in talks with Apple. It's too early to comment on whether the service would be rolled out to other countries with their own broadcast networks, but if it's successful in the States Apple would likely want to repeat that success elsewhere.

Bloomberg are also prophecising new hardware for Apple TV, the big talking point of which will be the fact that it runs iOS. Speaking of iOS they are also saying that there will be a new iPod Touch on show, which will not only feature an improved screen using the same technology as seen in the iPhone 4, but also a front facing camera.

Of course all of this is officially speculation at the moment as Apple doesn't confirm anything ahead of schedule so we'll just have to wait and see as to how correct Bloomberg's scrying has been.

huawei logo

Huawei may not be a name that immediately springs to mind when thinking of handset manufacturers, but that's an image the company is trying to change. Currently Huawei produces various hardware for networks around the world who then rebrand it with their own colours, but now the company is planning on releasing an own-branded Android handset at IFA.

The handset, known as the U8150, will be running Froyo out of the box, but it's not going to be a high-end effort. In terms of the specifications you will get a 528 MHz processor, a 2.8" capacitive touchscreen and a 3.2 MP camera. Nothing particularly exciting there although it will suport 802.11n to be fair. The specs might not be earth shattering, but they are reflected in the price of the handset, which in the UK will be around the 100 pound. It's obviously going to be aimed at the budget crowd, which is fair enough, after all that's one of Android's strong points, the fact that it can be tailored to different audiences.

Nokia said hundreds of times that S40 Touch will appear soon and these models were planned as an answer to Korean manufacturers, which dominate the touchscreen phones market. The development took a long time, but finally the first model of the series Nokia X3-02 was announced. I have already mentioned that it would be based on S40 6th Edition as from the outset all controls and fonts were large enough to be used for touch movements. I hoped that S40 would be a separate outlet of S40, when we will have models with touchscreens and without them. So far everything points to the defeat for models without touchscreens. Nokia labeled S40 6th Edition as the Feature Pack 1. It looks that all S40 models will have sensor support, even without the touchscreen option. This makes development cheaper, but can the end product offer high quality interface? Large fonts and controls make touchscreen models different from their more traditional counterparts.

The second one is a total commitment to the markets of Asia and Africa. Its design is not European and X3-02 looks like a gadget from China. Tastes differ, of course. In terms of ergonomics Nokia designers made one weird decision and moved traditional fourth row buttons to the right. It is highly original, but not very convenient for those who already had a mobile phone. Do they aim at complete neophytes?

The downside of this solution is the absence of traditional joystick or navigation key. Now you have to select links on the screen, which is logical, but some people will scroll up and down this way after failing to find the equivalent (which is available) on the keypad. This is a new user experience and it is a bit controversial.

The absence of the virtual keypad is explained by a relatively small screen, but some buyers will treat it as a downside. It is quite logical to have such a keypad on a touchscreen model. In other words Touch and Type series is a middle of the road hybrid of traditional candybars and touchscreen models.

X3-02 will cost around €125 at the end of September on selected markets, including Russia. The model has not featured in Nokia price lists, and the end of September is too early for our market (it can still go on sale during this period for an exclusive partner or in company retail as was the case with Nokia N8). I do not think the model will enjoy popularity in Russia and overtake ordinary touchscreen phones, even Nokia ones.

iPhone

The Teevox app is a free download that gives users the ability to use their iPhone as a remote control for web content on Hulu or Netflix. Select a show or movie from the app and Teevox will instantly start playing your selection in your computer’s browser. The app is essentially a mobile remote control so you can start, stop and fast-forward through shows, or use the volume controls to manage audio preferences. It’s the ultimate lazy person’s tool for lean-back web entertainment.

Also The droidish Motorola Charm so far doesn't have its Euro impersonation. Same time as Sony Ericsson vivaz. It is also available in two colors Golden Bronze and Cabernet. just sign a two-year T-Mobile US contract and it's yours for $75.

Motorola Quench XT5. Think of this phone as a tablet version of the Backflip. It has the same 3.2inch HVGA (320×480 pixels) display and 5.0MP camera with flash like the Backflip. However, the XT5 will run on Android 2.1 and have a 256MB RAM with 512MB ROM and From the looks of it, the Quench XT5 might be Motorola answer to the HTC Wildfire and Samsung Galaxy i5800, which would point towards a subRs 15,000 price point.

Winpho7

In a surprisingly information-packed interview at Microsoft's X'10 event in Toronto, RGBFilter managed to get the Microsoft rep, Greg Milligan, Mobility Solutions Manager. Microsoft Canada to admit to quite a scoop.

The rep confirmed that real time phone to Console gaming was coming over WIFI to Windows Phone 7 in the near future. He also revealed that games were coming where mini-games on the phone will unlock functionality in games on the console.

Of interest was the price range suggested by Greg in the $1.99 to $2.99 range, which is much lower that expected for Microsoft's Xbox Live titles.
also was that your game invites will show up as avatars of your friends on your tile, which is a pretty great feature.

HTC T8788

Contrary to what thoughts the name may invoke, the T8788 is not a Terminator. unless Skynet ever made a Windows Phone 7 powered Terminator whose sole purpose was to pump tunes out of a hidden slide-out speaker which is loud and Cool but HTC doesn't really care about Music or loud speakers as they are Innovative company keen on High technology and most of there phones are used for Business Needs not Entertainment which makes this phone a little bit weird ti be an HTC Windows phone 7 Device!

Dell unveiled the Aero back in March 2010 and even then nobody was happy to hear that the smartphone is offering plain Donuts instead of Eclairs. And now, when it finally made it to the stores, the Android OS version is still the same v1.5

Despite the software woes, the sleek Dell Aeroweighs only 104 grams and is 11.7mm thin. Under the hood it's got a 624MHz processor, 2GB microSD card, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support as well as an inbuilt GPS receiver.

The Aero has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen of the uncommon nHD resolution. That is yet another strange decision made by Dell and it may have a poor impact on application compatibility.

The Samsung tablet is just around the corner and, understandably, rumors about it are intensifying by the hour. But now we have something that’s better than any rumor or blurry spy shot – an official promo video.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The video doesn’t say much about the tablet itself but it still confirms that it will be running Android 2.2 and will support video-calling. There will also be a second camera at the back of the 7-inch tablet and it will allow full web browsing (which probably means Flash support).

Oh and the announcement is now certain to come on September 2. We just can’t wait to take it for a spin. Enjoy the Video Below!

Following up to some previous thoughts about Windows Phone 7, we present a short video showing how the browsing experience on the upcoming smartphone platform compares to iPhone and Android 2.2. Please note that the device shown in the video is not final Windows Phone 7 hardware or software. The hardware isn't meant to be released, and the software is still a work in progress. We're just doing this for fun. Video Below Enjoy!

Especially during the summer months, staring out into the ocean leads to daydreams of sailing the open water, freedom and exploration. Now you can take three-quarters of this vast planet - the ocean - with you on your mobile device by downloading the new Google Earth 1.1 for Android.

With the release of this feature, escape the hustle and bustle of life on land and discover the marine world using Google Earth on your mobile device. Now, you can check out the landscape and terrain in Monterery Bay Canyon, which is larger than the Grand Canyon, by zooming in on Google Earth below the ocean surface just off the coast. Once underwater, we can use the “look around” button to tilt the view and see the extent of this great undersea canyon.

The latest version of Google Earth for Android also introduces the “Explore the Ocean” layer, which features hundreds of photos and videos from more than 100 contributors who are excited to share their stories of sea. Plan your next vacation during your daily commute by clicking on any of the little blue icons. The gold highlighted icons represent content from th
e Mission Blue Hope Spot initiative.

For those of you running Android 2.2, there are some more treats in store. Google Earth now supports Flash in balloons, so if you have the Flash player installed on your mobile device, you can watch videos right in the balloon. We’ve also made the program easier to navigate; for most devices, you can now use two fingers to “look around” and change your viewpoint, as an alternate to using the on-screen button. This makes it even easier to tilt your view to see mountainous landscapes or underwater canyons. Rotating your view with a simple twist of your fingers is now available on more devices as well.

goggle

Google Googles looks to be making the leap to the iPhone at long last. The app has been a firm favourite on Android since it was launched, probably due to the fact that it's pretty damned useful. For those unfamiliar with the app it is essentially a visual search tool. You take a picture of something and the app searches the web for relevant information on it ex: a picture of a landmark might bring up relevant historical information. Google Goggles can also identify consumer products through barcode scanning and again will present relevant information on said product.

The move to Apple iOS was confirmed by David Petrou, an engineer at the Big G, who said that it would launch sometime before Christmas, which isn't all that far away now. Work is currently ongoing on the iPhone version so perhaps there are still some bugs to iron out. No doubt Google Goggles will be as big a hit with iPhone users as it has been with Android users. Google's apps prove very popular on both platforms.

windows phone 7 marketplace

Microsoft have been putting a lot of work into their app store for the forthcoming launch of Windows 7, no doubt realizing what an important part it will play in determining the success or failure of the platform as a whole. The developer tools Microsoft have made available so far have been downloaded more than 300,000 times according to the company. The dev tools are still be worked on though with the final release build due on 16th September. Microsoft are saying, however, that apps built using the beta tools shouldn't need too much tweaking.

In terms of actually submiting apps to the store early Octobe is being bandied around as the date, which of course ties in nicely with the speculation of a late October launch for the platform as a whole. The apps for Windows Phone 7 will be relying very much on Silverlight and XNA and Microsoft is stressing that this should allow devs to port apps over without too much hassle. Of course the fact that Microsoft are paying devs to create apps for their new platform probably removes some of the hassle too!

lg

The LG Windows phone 7 has a slide out keyboard, and what appears to be a front facing camera, implying that this might be a European market model. and the main specs are:

LG

  • 5 MP camera
its fairly certain the rear of the unit said "5 mpix" on it, however it was hard to tell since prototype units do not get the rear faceplate (you kind of have to hold the battery in, or put it down on a surface).

  • Slide out QWERTY
It has one. I like that. Unlike devices such as the Moto Droid, the keyboard is wide, nearly the width of the entire device, making the keys spaced-out and easy to use. I didn't like that the numeric keys are part of the top row instead of their own row (guess I'm spoiled by my rhodium), but I suppose I'd rather have larger keys over all since I don't use the number keys as much as the letters.

  • Screen is very responsive and supports multi-touch with pinch zooming
I think we all saw that one coming. Pinch is now ubiquitous with touch screen interfaces. Screen seemed rather bright, but I think it is still LCD (not AMOLED) judging by how the "black" pixels seem to still be lit.

The Samsung Tab Android tablet has appeared several times before, but this has to be the most detailed leak yet. see the leaked photos and specs

main Samsung P1000 Tab fondled in China, 1024x600 pixels resolution confirmed (sort of)

The Samsung P1000 Tab sports a 7-inch AMOLED touchscreen with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution. It is powered by Android OS 2.2 Froyo using the PowerVR SGX540 graphics chipset Samsung I9000 Galaxy S).

samsung

Also the other basics specs such as the Wi-Fi 802.11n support, GPS, 3.2MP camera on the back and a secondary front-facing QVGA one and 3G network connectivity. There’s also a reportedly very good eBook reading app, which means the Samsung Tab will be competing with the iPad on that front too.

Nokia N900

video of your face contains useful information such as who you are, where you are looking and how you are feeling. If we can extract this information from the video, it potentially paves the way for automatic face verification (i.e. determining whether you are who you claim to be), augmented reality and robots that can recognize emotions.

To get this information from the video we track landmarks on the face (e.g. around the eyes, nose, mouth and jawline) using a technique known as the Active Appearance Model that was pioneered by the University of Manchester. The positions of these landmarks relative to each other define the shape of your face and indicate where you are looking, your expression and (to a small degree) who you are. Your identity, however, is more strongly indicated by the texture of the face which we can extract by cutting out just the bits of the image that lie within the boundary defined by the landmarks on your eyebrows and jawline.

This Experiment achieved by the University of Manchester (UK). Using an N900, the research team developed a prototype that quickly locks and tracks 22 facial features in real time (even when upside down) using the Nokia's front-facing camera. The Active Appearance modeling technique was developed for the EU-funded Mobile Biometrics (MoBio) project as a means of using face verification to authenticate smartphone access to social media sites. Unfortunately, there's no mention of how long Manchester's face-verified login actually takes.

Windows phone 7 Devices keeps leaking around... this is the latest one and the first one from LG. the E900 with windows phone 7 UI and only one button below the 3.5-inch screen. Also a videos to show off this device has leaked to (Watch Video below). The device look great and attractive but No words or info on its specs yet!

Although Apple has been the dominant player in the recent tablet market, many manufacturers have been spending R+D dollars playing catch-up. Although many agree that a fully fledged operating system like Windows 7 would be difficult to adapt into a fully touch-based interface model, the designers at UI Centric are currently developing a promising looking solution.

Their user interface, codenamed "Macallan", looks to be an up-an-coming solution to the potential Windows 7 adaptation issue. With native multitasking, flash support and full camera functionality the impressive featureset of this upstart is targeting the iPad head-on. Combining these features with a very slick interface, UI Centric also states that a "major manufacturer" will be shipping their product in Q3 of this year.

While harnessing the abilities of a fully-fledged Windows 7 based deployment, Macallan simplifies navigation and usage into a similar, yet discrete, paradigm. Users familiar with iOS may be taken aback by the minimalist approach, but users should find themselves at home as the UI looks quite intuitive at first glance.

Google U

TAT UI ConceptIn 2010 and 2011 there will be a device explosion in the Tablet space. We can expect to see a wide variety of new devices ranging from 5 to 12 inches on operative systems such as MeeGo, Android and Windows 7. What kind of user experiences will these devices offer? How do you design astonishing tablet interfaces?

 UI

On one hand we have companies that scale phone UIs to tablets. On the other hand we have companies offering the full blown desktop experience scaled down to tablet size. We believe that both of these approaches will result in crippled user experiences. For example, the tablet form factor is perfect for media consumption and this could be manifested in the UI.

TAT recognizes tablets as a radically different type of device - personal and mobile yet powerful and creative. We are now on a quest to design fantastic UIs that are optimized for this device space. "

iphone 3G

A new email from Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to confirm that the company will soon be issuing a software update to address issues with the iPhone 3G's performance under iOS 4. Late last month, the company acknowledged that it was "looking into" user reports of the issues.

The new email came in response to feedback sent by a customer who expressed frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G, calling it "dog slow" and pointing to problems with system responsiveness when scrolling, zooming, and typing.

User Email:

I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.

Steve Jobs response:

Software update coming soon.

According to the screenshot we received it states that due to ongoing supply constraints from the manufacturer, the HTC Legend for Bell is effective immediately being discontinued. There is no explanation on what the HTC supply constraints are but  Bell goes on to say that those clients who are interested in the HTC Legend should be redirected to Bell is terrific line-up of Android smartphones… so basically saying we do not offer the Legend anymore, but do have the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.

There are many things up in the air here… we are not sure if Virgin Mobile HTC Legend will be affected by this. Ironically, Virgin just increased the price of the Legend from $79.99 to $99.99 on a 3-year. Plus there’s no word on what is going to happen to current Bell Legend clients and future OS updates.

main Vodafone HTC Desire to get the Froyo treatment tomorrow

The Android 2.2 Froyo deployment will happen gradually over a period of two weeks. The update campaign starts tomorrow and will end on 5 September.

Vodafone Official Post:

"Hi everyone

We’ve listened to feedback from customers on a number of points around the recent 360 Android 2.1 update and made some changes to the roll out plan.

The Android 2.2 update for Vodafone HTC Desire users will be based on the HTC open market version of the software and we will customise it to ensure our network settings are installed.

For customers who have downloaded the recent 360 update for Android 2.1, we can confirm that the Android 2.2 update will remove the 360 applications and will leave the homepage and bookmarks on your current settings.

Customers who want to access the 360 services will be able to do so once the Android 2.2 compatible version is available and, in the meantime, can now download apps like 360 People from the Android Marketplace.

We plan to make the 360 apps available in a separate update for the HTC Desire at a later date, giving customers the choice to download it.

We will let you know when the date for delivery of the Android 2.2 update is finalised, but, subject to testing, we expect this to be in 7-10 days time.

Thanks

In an interview with theWSJ, LG's VP of Marketing made the bold statement that "our tablet will be better than the iPad." Why so confident, LG? It's "going to be surprisingly productive," apparently.

After all, it's not the first time we've heard a company exec state on paper that their product is better than the iPhone/iPad/sliced bread. But to follow up a claim like that with the tease of content-creating features, such as document, video and photo-editing leaves me feeling a little dry.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a tablet that can handle a video editing suite, or something like Photoshop for tinkering with photos. But when LG's tablet is expected to run on Android, it's going to have a tough time distinguishing it from other Android tablets. They'll have to pump it with quad-core chips and slap at least a couple of USB ports on there to live up to those claims.

Google Nexus one Developers Edition SOLD-OUT AGAIN!

Press Release from Google:

"A couple of weeks ago, we arranged that registered developers could buy an unlocked Nexus One via their publisher page in Android Market. We think it's a good development platform and a nice phone. Apparently, you agree. Somewhat too many of you, in fact; we blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time, and they’re back-ordered from HTC, who are doing a pretty good job of managing runaway success amid a worldwide AMOLED shortage. Everyone appreciates that it’s important to the platform to get phones in the hands of developers, so we’re working hard on re-stocking the shelves; stand by. "

We know that a Halo offshoot will be coming to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and the idea of controlling Master Chief on your phone has many gamers salivating. The company is showing off a brief demo of the Waypoint app and it could just be a taste of what’s to come.

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 gets Waypoint app

If you’re not a hardcore gamer, then you probably have no idea what Halo Waypoint is. It’s not really a game but a way to keep track of all your Halo community and stats. Microsoft said the app only took three months to get on Silverlight and it will be available for free in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

As Windows Phone 7 looms, Microsoft appears to be placing a large emphasis on gaming and that’s a good thing in my mind. Microsoft’s Xbox is arguably the best console gaming experience – PlayStation 3 may have better graphics and the Wii may have more casual appeal but I think the Xbox puts together the best combination of games, graphics and services.

You Must Have Microsoft Silverlight to view this Video!

iphone4

The white iPhone 4 is a bit like nuclear Fusion; long promised, much sought after, but never seeming to quite maange to get itself out of the lab. Well that might be about to change (for the iPhone we mean, nuclear fusion is still decades from a commercial rollout). A video has appeared on the tubes showing the handset being unboxed and it looks like the genuine article. Apple have stated on two separate occasions that the white version of the iPhone was throwing up challenges to manufacturing that they hadn't expected and thus there was a delay. Enjoy the Video Below!

RIM

Some sort of compromise could be on the cars between RIM and the Indian government according to an undisclosed source who has been speaking with Reuters.  Currently the Indian government is demanding that RIM provide them with the ability to intercept and read Blackberry enterprise emails and messages sent using Blackberry Messenger. The government are viewing the situation from a national security perspective, worried that terrorists could use the service to plan attacks similar to those carried out in Mumbai.

RIM currently has a technical team in New Delhi working on the issue with the department of telecoms in India as well as India's security agencies. The unnamed source said "We are expecting they will come up with some solution for Enterprise mail next week." If no solution is found then RIM could find itself thrown out of the Indian market as the Indian government have set a deadline of 31st August for the situation to be resolved to their satisfaction. Blackberry Messenger will be allowed to continue to operate past the deadline since the Indian government say they have been assured of access to that service, but email services would be stopped.

G2

You have probably heard that T-Mobile USA are running a teaser site for their mysterious upcoming Android smartphone the G2. These are the first shots of the device and we gotta say that for something that was supposed to continue the revolution started by its predecessor, it does look quite dull.

See the Photos and it might be quite blurry a little but it shows the Shape and the Design of the Phone and thats all we Need right Now...Stay tuned for Upcoming Specs!

Samsung has just Released a Collection of Galaxy S accessories. The line of premium accessories includes a desktop dock, a charger with a second battery, a vehicle dock, a video streaming box and various carrying cases.

The desktop dock is meant to be used with the Desk Home app. It will turn your smartphone into very convenient and capable media player and allow making hand-free calls.

The vehicle dock (with additional USB connector for charging) and the leather/silicon/neoprene cases don't need any explanation. They look excellent and bear the Galaxy S logo. Samsung has really surprised us with this Gorgeous collection.

X10

The Xperia X10 is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which was powerful enough that the device didn't feel sluggish during most tasks. Its 4-inch 854 x 480 pixel touchscreendisplay was crisp, but didn't compare to the Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Captivate, also available on AT&T (although it was a bit easier to read in daylight). The built quality of the Xperia X10 is solid, and more than one person commented on how attractive it looked. I also liked the two white LED notification lights next to the phone's hardware buttons just below the display.

BB2.0

RIM will slowly be adding credit card billing and carrier billing over the next few months, starting with ATT. Its also lowering the minimum price to 99 cents and $1.99 per app from a previously self-imposed limit of a much higher $2.99. Carrier billing is considered the best way to sell applications and other mobile content to wireless subscribers because it takes the least amount of work users don’t have to enter credit card numbers, or even a user name and password to a PayPal account.

The BlackBerry App World update will also improve usability. Updates include:

  • The store will have new sections where users can easily see the Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid Apps and Top 25 Themes, as well as the Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps.
  • QR barcode scanning will be supported, allowing a QR code associated with an application from anywhere the web, print ads, brochures—to link to its corresponding download page.
  • Users will have BlackBerry IDs that enable credit card payments and allow customers to seamlessly transfer their personal library of free and purchased apps when they switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

Remember the Dell Thunder and the other weather-themed droids that leaked in April? The Thunder even starred in a video. No, it's not official yet but it already has its first preview!

gsmarena 002 Dell Thunder prototypes previewed, liked, still no official announcement

Engadget got their hands on a couple of Dell Thunder prototypes and managed to confirm some specs while raising questions about others. The units were far from production ready – one ran Android 1.6 Cupcake, the other 2.1 Eclair and the software had support for hardware that wasn’t present (e.g. an HDMI port).

And both Thunders had LCD screens rather than the AMOLEDs we were expecting. This could be just for the prototype (or is Dell feeling the AMOLED shortage too?). Anyway, one of the screens had the usual 480×800 WVGA resolution, though Engadget claim the other screen had a resolution possibly as high as 1280×768.

The Huge Company HP responded to a question about whether or not tablets (read: iPad) were hurting netbook sales. In reponse, HP publicly confirmed that a webOS Tablet is coming in the timeline we were expecting, saying they will release "a webOS-based product in Early 2011." Hearing that in an investor call is quite a bit nicer than hearing it was said in an HP all-hands meeting.

Typically Apple, the iPad camera connection kit was posted in their online store with only the bare minimum of information. I went ahead and bought one anyway and now that I have been using it for a week now, I am ready to pass on everything you may need to know about this little bit of hardware (plus some things you may never need).

The Apple iPad camera connection kit consists of a USB adapter and a SD card reader. They both allow you only to transfer data TO the iPad and not offload data FROM it. Another thing you may be interested to know is the accessory is not compatible with any iPhones generation, it only works for the iPad. No surprises so far, all that was to be expected.

Droid2

It's identical Dorid 2 and Droid pro Verizon computer that showed the global roaming Motorola Droid Pro, and a world phone edition of the Droid 2? Both devices were said to have global capable GSM radios, allowing them to roam on wireless networks outside the US (where CDMA is pretty much non-existent). Well, we were correct about there being a GSM capable version of the Motorola Droid 2 hitting market, but it turns out that the Droid Pro is in fact just a D2 with CDMA and GSM capabilities built-in. The two phones are one in the same.

Because the D-Pro and the D2 global roaming devices are actually the same device, it looks like the upgraded specs that we saw won’t be present. We were really looking forward to seeing a 4-inch Droid device that had a 1.3 GHz processor under the hood, but we’re guessing that won’t be happening this time around. Motorola and Verizon could have had a nice leg up on the competition by offering up a 1.3 GHz CPU on a phone this soon, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer.

This technology enables the internal wiring of a mobile device to be streamlined through a single cable (copper wire). Conventionally, the video, audio and control signals as well as the power transmission were spread out over several dozen cables within the movable mechanisms of mobile devices, such as hinges or rotating parts. Sony aims to promptly implement this technology to improve design flexibility, reliability and durability for mobile devices with movable mechanisms.

In recent years, mobile devices have become ever more sophisticated in terms of advanced functionality and high resolution displays. As a result, more wiring connections have been used to accommodate the increasing volume of data being transmitted within devices.
Accordingly, new problems began to emerge as connectors in devices became larger and it became more difficult to bend the connecting cables.

Sony's newly-developed 'single wire interface technology' has achieved bi-directional transmission of several kinds of signals, including video, audio and control signals, by using time division duplex and multiplex
. In addition, the DC power is supplied on the same signal cable. Sony's unique encoding technology with DC balance enables both DC power supply and high speed data to be transmitted within a limited frequency bandwidth.

In order to swiftly begin practical implementation of this technology, Sony has teamed up with ROHM , which has a track record in peripheral technologies, for the joint development and technical validation for the analog portion of the test chip.
Hereafter, Sony will grant ROHM a license for the IP of the digital portion of this newly-developed technology in order to advance the development of a single chip which includes both the analog and digital portions.

Nividia

LG Electronics on Thursday confirmed that it would be using a dual-core processor manufacturered by Nvidia for its line of Optimus smartphones later this year. That is a coup for Nvidia, which has been pushing to enter the smartphone market with its Tegra chip and expand beyond its traditional business of providing graphics chips for PCs.

So far, the most notable phone to use Tegra was Microsoft’s failed Kin youth-centric device. But LG committing to Nvidia gives the graphics-chip maker something to potentially boast about. Much of the awareness of the faster generation of 1-gigahertz processors for smartphones have focused on Qualcomm Inc.’s Snapdragon processor, found in HTC’s Incredible and Evo, or Samsung Electronics’s Hummingbird chip, found in its own line of Galaxy S phones.

Nvidia, however, isn’t the only company packing a dual-core chip. Qualcomm has also talked about a dual-core Snapdragon chip.

Nvidia wasn’t immediately available for comment. The company has previously said it expects to have several smartphones, as well as hybrid netbook-smartphones called smartbooks, using its Tegra chip by the end of the year.

Android

It's common knowledge that Android is fast pacing it to the top of the smartphone market and some new research by DigiTimes firmly cements that picture. The report basically lays out a vision of the global smartphone market growing by some 57% in 2010 with Android taking the lion's share of that growth. Last year Android had just 5% of the global smartphone market, but that has ballooned to 13.8% in the first six months of this year and DiGiTimes are projecting that figure to almost double to 24.5% by the year's end. That figure would put Android in the number 2 spot globally, behind Symbian, which commands around 40% of the market.

In terms of actual units shipped the projection is that Android will see an astonishing 55 million units ship this year. A year on year comparison means that 55 million this year would represent a 561% growth over shipments last year. Of course big growth figures aren't surprising given that Android is coming fromhaving just one device back in 2008 (the G1) to the multitude of devices that now adorn the shelves at your local mobile shop. However, it is worth pointing out that alongside those impressive growth figures are equally impressive sales figures; 55 million units is a lot in anyone's book, whether they're coming from behind or not.

iPhone Rec stick

iPhone security has had a few knocks over the years, but once the intitial hubub dies down the problem is usually sorted out pretty quickly. Well here we have an interesting little security issue for the iPhone that's not a software bug. The 'iPhone Spy Stick' is a USB dongle that can serve one of two purposes; on the one hand it could be used to recover lost data from your iPhone and on the other it could be used to steal deleted data from your iPhone.

The amount of data that it can access is quite impressive and ranges from the obvious like text messages and contacts to things like your map history. That last one is particularly interesting because it means that someone could see locations you have been searching for. Before you start panicking it's worth noting that the iPhone Security Stick is $199 so whilst it is within the reach of the common man it's pricey enought hat you shouldn't see too many people running around with one of these.

The iPhone Recovery Stick recovers the following deleted data:

SMS/Text Messages

Call History

Contacts

Web History

Appointments

Photos

Voice Memos

Map/Location Data

Phone Property Data

SMS Messages: Perhaps the most important place to find evidence of misbehavior.

Call History: Finding call history for a cell phone user is nearly impossible anymore. The iRecovery Stick can show you more than you thought possible.

Contacts: You can easily see all the contacts stored on an iPhone.

Web History: We all know how important Internet history is when you need to know someone's online activity. Now, you can find out where they've been online, even when they're surfing with their iPhone.

Calendar/Appointment Reminders: The iPhone calendar allows you to set reminders about appointments and tasks. See what was so important that a calendar reminder had to be set.

Photos: Sometimes, getting pictures off an iPhone isn't easy. It is now. Simply export your pictures from your iPhone recovery and you're all set.

Voice Memos: The iRecovery Stick downloads voice memos so you can hear things you thought you never would.

Map History: iPhones store map history right on the phone. The iRecovery Stick can get this history so you not only see where they searched within maps (whether its by name or address) but you can see exactly where that location is right down the the GPS coordinate.

Dynamic Text Data: Most people don't realize that iPhones learn what you type. These words are saved as dynamic text for the next time you use a unique word. Things like a person's name, the name of a restaurant, etc. are easily identifiable and can help you catch a cheater.

Phone Properties: Just like a computer, iPhones have many properties such as model number, serial number, phone number, iOS version, etc. This information can be useful if your investigation ever needs to be presented as evidence in court.

Recovers Data From iTunes Backup Files: The iRecovery Stick can recover deleted data even if you don't have the phone. Simply load the iTunes backup files created in Windows and the stick will recover the same types of data it recovers from the phone itself.

Nokia

Nokia are giving the rather tired looking, and underperforming, Comes With Music service a rebrand. The new service will be known as "Ovi Music Unlimited" as a pert of Nokia Ovi. The trouble is though that that is just about all Nokia have done ... change the name. One of the biggest criticisms of Comes With Music was the harsh DRM lockdown in use, which meant that you had to download music to a registered PC and a single registered handset where there would be license checking in order for the music to actually play. None of that is changing with the 'new' service so you will still be limited in how you listen to the music. It's not really in keeping with the spirit of the term 'unlimited' in the title now is it?

On the plus side Nokia are saying that they will make it easier to search for and download the music. That was another criticism many had of the old Comes With service, the UI being not very nice to work with on mobile devices. Improving the UI will at least be a step in the right direction, but the DRM is probably still going to be a major turn-off for many. It's not as if there is no precedent for Nokia offering DRM free music, their Comes With Music service in China is DRM free so why not the rest of the world?

The attempts to create a gaming device based on a mobile phone are not new. Sony Ericsson was always the most ambitious in this respect. Its phones were the first to feature the horizontal orientation of the screen and dedicated gaming buttons A+B. This project turned out to be a non starter. In 2005 Walkman series was launched and 2007 was to see the launch of a PSP phone, but Sony finally discarded the idea. Look at the patent for the model from 2005.

Sony believed that such a phone could have negatively influenced the sales of PSP. At the same time Sony Ericsson was reluctant to develop a gaming phone without the rich array of games and necessary gaming support. In this classical situation Sony refrained from becoming a pioneer to retain the current market share. A severe crisis, drop in sales, loss of its market share led to the arrival of the new management and old projects resurfaced. At the end of 2009 Sony Ericsson returned to the development of a gaming phone. Sony was not against this time, because they gradually move away from UMD disks for distribution and adopt electronic sales, which is easier and more sensible. I don't want to remind you that PSP was unlocked within months and game images could be downloaded from memory cards.

In 2011 the company will try to return to the market with the unique selling point, which I rather like. People from Engadget found all the information about it and even created the image of the future model.

The picture is horrible and brings more damage than good, because it does not convey the design, which deserves a lot of credit. We have to keep the phone in our hands (which is impossible now) to assess it. In pictures it looks not only glossy, but is quite attractive and differs from PSP Go. It reminds me of my euphoria from the first PSP. The materials are similar, but it is a phone after all.
