MeeGoUI

MeeGo1.1

We Have seen the MeeGo UI caught on video several times, but a new videos shows off what could be Nokia's take on the platform. It features smooth looking support for social networking, the MeeGo section of the Ovi Store and the music player.

It looks better than earlier builds though Intel’s AppUp store seemed to be easier to browse and offers more info at a glance in the app details page. Anyway, Hope you like the New MeeGo UI.

The whole social networking thing (especially Facebook) looks very tightly integrated with the MeeGo OS. The music player looks pretty good too and there will be FM radio support.

The iOS 4 brought many changes and new features to all the compatible devices. We just unearthed a new feature that has so far laid low below our radar. It obviously skipped the official praises by Apple as well and you only get to see it once you install a compatible application from the Apple AppStore.

But without further ado, I present you… drag-and-drop file transfers from any desktop computer to any iOS device (incl. iPad) over a cable USB connection. No syncing needed. How’s that for a start?

We discovered the drag-and-drop functionality when we installed the nicely rated Filer 2.0.1 app from the AppStore. Before I continue.

Besides advanced file management features such as extracting files from ZIP and RAR archives or compressing files to ZIP, Filer also comes with an integrated web browser and a file downloader that allows you to snatch most files off the internet as you please (it downloads them in the background). It can also tap into your Dropbox account and work with the files there (if you use their popular service).

But besides getting the files to your iDevice (be it iPad or iPhone), Filer also takes care of opening and previewing those – even office documents. You can even opt for checking them out in another application straight from Filer. And it’s got a custom interface for the big screen of the iPad without charging you extra.

ipad

Transferring the files is easy too – Filer creates both an HTTP and a FTP file server on your local network, so you can access the files wirelessly through your computer’s browser. OR, you can simply use the USB cable to drag-and-drop them on your computer.

Yeap, the most interesting thing about it is the so-called iTunes USB sharing – a new feature, which has obviously been introduced by iOS 4 and the latest iTunes.

Once you connect your iDevice to iTunes, you’ll see a new placeholder under the Applications tab in iTunes. It shows all the files hosted by Filer on your iDevice. You can add new ones or download the existing ones as easy as cake. You don’t need to sync to iTunes, you don’t even need to have the iDevice synced to that particluar computer.

For all it’s worth, it could be your friend’s PC or Mac, it doesn’t matter. Drop a file and it’s there on the iDevice. Drag a file to the computer and voilà, it’s there on your desktop. All changes are instant just like a through a normal file browser. And you don’t need to have your iDevice jailbroken for this to work.

Using the new USB file transfer we were able to sneak on the iPad a MOV video file that was otherwise rejected by iTunes as incompatible.

It's been how what, three years since Windows Mobile 6 hit the scene? The wait for version 7 is nearing an end. Microsoft's COO Kevin Turner spilled the beans that Windows Phone 7 will arrive in the October November 2010

gsmarena 001 Windows Phone 7 coming to Europe in October, then to the US in November

Redmond's new hope to regain some footing in the mobile market (after the KIN project flopped badly) is Windows Phone 7 a pretty drastic departure from the 6.x line. Mr. Turner says that WP7 phones will not like any other we’ve seen from Microsoft and that it’s a good thing.

It is a good thing indeed, but will it be enough, remains to be seen. Apparently Europe will get Windows Phone 7 devices first, some time in October, and then the US in November.

In that time plenty of droids will have received the Android 2.2 Froyo update (some HTCs are getting it right now), even Symbian^3 may have debuted with the Nokia N8 (we’ll have to wait and see what kind of reception this one gets too). And Apple released four new OS versions starting from about the time WinMo 6 launched.

There are some quite interesting devices running Windows Phone 7 on the way, but by the time they come out competing OSes will have some serious lead.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. issued a statement to its customers assuring them that their data was secure, a day after regulators in the United Arab Emirates said they'd tussled with RIM over access to that data.

Monday's statement also comes a day before a major product announcement for RIM, which is widely expected to roll out a new touch-screen smartphone with revamped software to challengeApple Inc.'s iPhone 4 and devices that run on Google Inc.'s Android system.

The new BlackBerry is expected to have a slide-out keyboard in addition to its touch screen and be offered initially through AT&TInc. in the U.S.

The U.A.E. said Sunday it would ban most BlackBerry services starting in October, citing national-security concerns. The country's telecommunications regulator said Monday such a ban would apply to both domestic customers and international roaming users.

The government is worried it wouldn't be able to compel RIM to turn over customer data, now processed in RIM's private servers outside the country, said a person familiar with the situation.

The U.A.E. wanted RIM to locate servers in the country, where it had legal jurisdiction over them; RIM had offered access to the data of 3,000 clients instead, the person said.

RIM's statement didn't address the ban or its talks with U.A.E. directly, citing the "confidential nature'' of discussions with governments. But the company outlined the features of BlackBerry's security system and said it would be impossible for RIM to circumvent them.

RIM said the BlackBerry network was set up so that "no one, including RIM, could access'' customer data, which is encrypted from the time it leaves the device. It added RIM would "simply be unable to accommodate any request'' for a key to decrypt the data, since the company doesn't have the key.

The BlackBerry network is designed "to exclude the capability for RIM or any third party to read encrypted information under any circumstances,'' RIM's statement said.

The location of BlackBerry's servers doesn't matter, the company said, because the data on them can't be deciphered without a decryption key.

"RIM assures customers that it will not compromise the integrity and security of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution,'' the statement said.

RIM's statement comes as a number of countries, including India and Kuwait, say they want more ability to monitor BlackBerry communications, in the interests of national security.

The Motorola MILESTONE will get to taste the Froyo a.k.a. Android 2.2 after all. And we don't mean any custom hacked ROMs but an official update that, according to O2 Germany, is on its way and should to arrive sometime in the middle or at the end of September.

The Motorola MILESTONE first packed the Android 2.0 and the Android 2.1 came several months later. A handful bugs left after the update were only fixed a couple of weeks ago.

Motorola MILESTONE Froyo update

And then, at the end of July, the company announced that it isn't clear yet whether there will be anAndroid 2.2 update at all which not only disappointed all MILESTONE owners but all the Moto fans out there.

After all, since its release (less than a year ago) the device has always been falsely advertised as featuring a Flash-capable web browser. The Adobe Flash Player 10.1, however, only works on devices running Android 2.2.

Anyway, what really counts is that we finally have the promise for a Froyo treatment. And according to O2 Germany this should become available by the middle-slash-end of September 2010. We're only sorry that the good news doesn't come from Motorola itself.
