iphone4

Today the iPhone 4G is launched in Canada for this Morning. Lines formed early and stayed strong through much of the day, and generally, camaraderie seemed high always a good thing when you're standing a foot away from the same handful of people in summer heat for hours on end. As you might expect, the wait for subsidized phones was longer than for the considerably pricier unlocked ones.

EVO

Android 2.2 is supposed to roll out to the Sprint EVO next week, but it looks like there's a direct download already available through HTC. Here's how to get it.

First you need to download the update from here. Once done, you should save it to the root of your phone's SD card, boot the device in recovery mode, and select the option to install the update from the .zip file. Tada! That's all you need to do to enjoy all the new features Froyo brings to the EVO.

Download the Update Release Here

Here is some Simple instructions for installing the update:

  1. Download the update file and rename it to update.zip.
Note #1: DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE
Note #2: Make sure you didn’t rename this to update.zip.zip by accident, if your Windows is configured to not show file extensions.
  2. Place in the root of your SD card (connect via USB and mount as a drive, transfer via bluetooth, download directly on the phone – pick your poison).
  3. Reboot into recovery mode (hold the Volume Up button while your phone is booting).
  4. You will be presented with the boot loader. The Volume Up/Down buttons navigate the menu, and the Power button selects.
Note: you may see the red exclamation (!) point at this stage. Try mashing the up/down/power buttons and wait for 10-15 seconds. The recovery should eventually come up.
  5. Select Bootloader.
  6. Scroll down to Recovery and select it.
  7. The phone will reboot again, this time into recovery.
  8. Select “apply update.zip” or “install from .zip” (depending on your recovery image).
  9. The installation process will take 15-20 minutes and a few reboots.
  10. Enjoy!

NOTE: HTC has tweeted a warning about this download

"Please, be aware any update.zip floating around for EVO 4G are not final and may cause problems. Official updates are coming OTA next week!"

apple

Apple has been facing problems with its latest version of iOS on the iPhone 3G, namely that many users are reporting sluggish behaviour after upgrading. Now to be fair to Apple they did make it clear that iOS 4 wouldn't be bringing all its bells and whistles to the 3G e.g. no multi-tasking since the 3G's hardware simply can't support such features comfortably. However, Apple presumably didn't envisage the sort of problems people are now reporting and there is apparently an investigation underway on Apple's part into the issue. That might produce something in the long run, but in the here and now users are complaining and the whole process is looking rather annoying for those who own a 3G.

Indeed French network SFR are advertising the problems on their website for 3G owners thinking of taking the plunge. Whilst SFR warn that the upgrade process is 'irreversible' that isn't exactly true as a downgrade is possible, albeit not necessarily as easy as the upgrade. All in all it's another mess for Apple at a time when they could really be doing with some good publicity for a change.

As Windows Phone 7 draws ever nearer to launch day the leaks surrounding it are starting to mount. It wasn't long ago that we saw HTC's Win Phone 7 handset codenames leaked and today it's the turn of Samsung to see one of their upcoming Win Phone 7 devices make an appearance on the interwebs. The device, named Cetus, presumably after the constellation and not the ancient Greek terror of the seas, will be running Microsoft's latest OS and will sport such features as a 5 MP camera, GPS and a front facing camera. The screen will be an OLED effort and weigh in at a very respectable 4 inches. Obviously there is no word on things like pricing or release dates as yet, although the handset will apparently receive the catchy title SGH-i917 in the U.S. What it will be called and when it will be released anywhere else is up for debate.

So that was the Nokia C7-00 after all. It took half a dozen of leaks but the identity of the leaked Nokia prototype is finally confirmed. And what's even better, most of its specs got confirmed too so we know what to expect.

Nokia C7-00 will run on the latest Symbian^3 operating system and, as previously rumored, will pack an 8 megapixel autofocus camera. Its capacitive touchscreen will stretch over 3.3 inches and will feature the usual for Symbian handsets nHD resolution. There is also support for multi-touch gestures mentioned.

The leaked Nokia C7-00 ad also confirms a microUSB port, a 3.5mm audio jack and 720p video recording. 3G radio and microSD card slot for memory expansion are also present inside the slim 11mm body of the handset. It all adds up to a trimmed-down version of the Nokia N8, which should provide a nice Symbian^3 alternative to the mass-market.

With the press materials all ready to go, we suspect that the Nokia C7-00 announcement can't be far away now. Its release will probably come after N8 hits the shelves so Q4 sounds like a realistic release schedule.
