Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40 Beta

Nokia Beta Labs launched a new version of the Nokia Ovi Suite, which is said to pack a number of usability improvements. Version 3.1.1.40 allows users to more easily install apps right from the Ovi Suite homescreen presuming your phone is connected to a computer, click "Download and install" on the app you want and let the software do its magic.

Similarly, the Maps view has been improved as well. For one thing finding the maps you want and keeping track of the ongoing downloads is more straightforward than before. In that sense, downloading many maps at the same time can help you save a lot of time.

The new features in Nokia Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40 Beta:

  • The direct download and installation of free Ovi Store apps, games, and more from the Nokia Ovi Suite home view to your connected phone. Just sign in first with Nokia account.
  • A simplified Maps view. You can instantly see which maps you have on your phone.
  • Support for quicker and smaller Nokia Ovi Suite updates (patch support). For example, Nokia Ovi Suite can be updated from the Nokia Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40 release to Nokia Ovi Suite 3.1.1.50 with an update package that is considerably smaller in size. Updating naturally takes place more swiftly. Major updates to Nokia Ovi Suite, like updating Nokia Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40 to Nokia Ovi Suite 3.2.0.50 still require the download of the full update package.
  • Lots of error corrections. For example, over 30 crash errors have been fixed in this release.

I am sure you are all familiar with the Dragon NaturallySpeaking software. It lets you input text or control certain functions of your computer just by using your voice. With the latest 11.5 update, it has learned a new trick. You can now send messages on Facebook and Twitter using your voice. All you have to do is say Post to Facebook [your message] or Post to Twitter [your message] and the software will do the rest.

But thats not all. There is also a new Dragon Remote Microphone app for iOS, which lets you use the device as a wireless mic for your PC. While the mobile app is free, you will have to shell out $99 or $199 for the Home or Premium version of the desktop application. While it will no doubt make the life of lazybones easy, it will also greatly assist those who are disabled and find it difficult or impossible to use traditional input methods.

Communication keeps our social life interesting, no matter whether you are talking to an old high school friend or your boss, its a part of life. When you have your own family, a job, and hobbies, you must spend less time sitting at computer and chatting using Skype, Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ etc.

MSN Talk

MSN Talk

1. MSN Talk

It was hard to find a decent application which would replace Windows Live Messenger and run on my Android. One of my first tries was Meebo which had an awful design and lack of features.

Why is MSN Talk better? I wll start with the fact that it has a good looking design, but besides that, there are a lot of features: it supports unique emoticons, you can set up your own avatar and groups and send/receive nudges, and its easy to customize.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Skype

2. Skype – Nimbuzz

Recently Skype developed an official application for Android phones, but for some strange reason its not available in some countries such as Republic of Moldova and Montenegro. Instead, I am going to propose you try Nimbuzz which has a calm design and some basic features such as status updates and group chat. The only downside is that its calls are not really stable However, you can use Nimbuzz for Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and MySpace.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

ICQ

ICQ

3. ICQ LIVE

At first I started to use the standard version of ICQ but the client was not stable and it crashed a lot. ICQ Live is as detailed as the official computer software; you can easily update your profile, mood messages, groups chat and of course block and add contacts. I am really satisfied with it! It’s the only decent ICQ app I have found.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Yahoo

4. Yahoo Messenger

“One small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind”, this quote fits a little the situation with Yahoo Messenger. We were obligated to use eBuddy in order to log on to our messenger accounts for a long time, and this is a really big step forward for Yahoo since their official Android application release. It has both a pleasing design and unique functions such as video calls, Facebook integration, group chat with Windows Live users, and more.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Twitter

Twitter

5. Twidroyd

I asked lot of people which client they use for Twitter and I never heard any other answer than "Twidroyd" of course I tried some other applications, but they had ugly design and lack of functions, plus some of them would crash. Twidroyd is pretty simple but it has a clean design so even my mother can Tweet without problems. Every time I use this client I think that the website should be the same.

Price: $3.99
Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

MySpace

MySpace

6. MySpace Mobile

When I mention MySpace in public, some people keep asking me if it still exists. Yes, it exists, and it’s way better than it was before. Plus, in comparison with other bigger companies it has a really nice Android client. It contains all the features that the official website has and you can easily manage the content and your profile. It’s still in beta so there will be some function and design improvements but I can recommend it to you even now.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

AIM

AIM

7. AIM – BeeJive

As you may have noticed from my reviews above, I like applications with good design. The computer version of AIM itself is a bit ugly and has some boring graphics which makes it looks like its from the ’90s. After a long search I was able to find BeeJive’s version of AIM which not only makes my eyes smile but also contains plenty of features, leeting you easily update your status, add new contacts, and check your email. This application costs $9.99, but its worth the price because it includes MSN, Facebook, and GTalk.

Price: $9.99
Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Google Talk

Google Talk

8. Google Talk – eBuddy

Google Talk loses more and more popularity every day so I wouldn’t recommend you buying an application just for the GTalk. There is no great need to as it doesn’t have many features anyway. I do suggest you use eBuddy, due to its simplicity and how it comes together with Yahoo Messenger, AIM, and other IM clients. If you’re not satisfied with eBuddy, try BeeJive which is listed above.

Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Facebook

Facebook

9. FriendCaster

If you check out the official Facebook application on the Android Market, you will notice that a lot of people are not satisfied with it because it causes a lot of problems such as constant lag or instant crashing when checking the Friends tab. Luckily there exists FriendCaster which has a decent design and works better than the original version, from a functionality point of view. It will cost you a few dollars but trust me, its worth it.

Price: $3.99
Tested on: Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Dailybooth

Dailybooth

10. Boothr

Dailybooth is a new growing social network, which I am sure will soon be as popular as Twitter and Facebook. I have been using it for a year so far, and was excited to see the Android applications appear recently. I am glad to present you with Boothr; its easy to manage and does not cost a lot of data. The features are the same as the official website: you can check notifications, write comments, post booths, and spy on the live feed. You are also able to change your profile information, set up the movies and books you like, change your username and so on.

As Rovio promised the next Angry Birds update is already available for download. Its called Mine and Dine and gives us the beginning of a brand new sixth chapter. The Mine and Dine update brings the first 15 levels of the new chapter, a new way to battle pigs and most probably there is a new golden egg somewhere.

There is even more with this update Rovio has tweaked some really difficult levels from the previous chapters so you can beat them with less efforts. Plus there is now a better integration with the Mighty Eagle update. I also heard that the new version now has the option to turn off the background, so the game can run fine on even older, less powerful phones.

Discovery is one of the most common complaints about the ever-growing number of smartphone apps: With hundreds of thousands of apps, how can people find the best one for whatever they are looking for? Now Yahoo is making an effort to solve the problem, both on your computer with a new Yahoo App Search service, and on iPhones and Android devices with a new Yahoo AppSpot app.

Shashi Seth, Yahoo senior vice president of search and marketplaces, compared the current state of the app world to the early days of the Web, before Yahoo founders made navigation easier with their listings and search engine. In fact, he said that people are already using Yahoo Search as a way to find apps. So, as part of the company broader mission to provide answers, not links , Yahoo tried to provide more information for people searching for apps.

Now, when you search for an app by name or type, instead of just offering a link to a listing in an app store, Yahoo now points people to a Yahoo profile page about the app, including reviews, an overall star rating, screenshots, and pricing. If you decide that you want to try the app, you can scan the QR code on the profile with your device, or Yahoo can send a text message to your phone with a link to the store. Yahoo also points to related apps and, if you have downloaded the AppSpot app, it provides daily app recommendations, personalized based on factors like what apps you have already downloaded to your phone.
