TECNO’s Ella AI assistant just got a lot more useful

Most people haven’t heard of TECNO, but the brand is a serious player in emerging markets across Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The company has been quietly building out its AI strategy since 2024, and at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, it showed off the next chapter of that work, including a big upgrade to the TECNO Ella AI assistant.

The updated Ella is now more context-aware than before. According to TECNO, it can read and reply to WhatsApp messages on your behalf, summarize YouTube videos, and offer smarter task organization suggestions. These aren’t flashy demo features. They’re the kind of things people actually use their phones for every day.

Ella also gets a new home inside the refreshed HiOS 16 operating system, which brings a redesigned “Minus One” screen that puts productivity tools, translation, and AI content features all in one spot.

TECNO’s Bigger AI Picture

The Ella upgrades are part of a broader push TECNO calls “Practical AI,” a strategy focused on building useful AI tools for people in markets where a smartphone is often the primary device for everything. TECNO says it processed over 500 million user requests in 2025 alone, including around 100 million image-processing tasks. More than half of those interactions happened in languages other than English, which tells you a lot about who TECNO is building for.

That localization focus is a real differentiator. At its MWC 2026 booth, TECNO demonstrated support for mixed Hindi-English recognition, Standard Arabic, and even the Iraqi dialect. The company also showed off an experimental agent that can complete tasks on your phone based on simple prompts.

On the CAMON 50 Series, Ella ties into tools like One-Tap FlashMemo for quick notes and AI MindHub for research. TECNO’s camera work has been pushing the boundaries for a while now, and Ella is becoming the thread that ties all of it together.

It’s worth keeping in mind that all of this is happening while Apple is still struggling to ship the Siri upgrade it first promised back in 2024. TECNO isn’t a household name in the West, but it’s shipping AI features that actually work right now.
