Sony’s 1979 Retro Walkman Headphones Return With USB-C Connectivity

Sony recently announced the launch of the new MDR-3R, a pair of USB-C wired headphones which feature a rather retro design. Sony says that the new model is inspired by the classic MDR-3 that originally debuted alongside the Walkman TPS-L2 all the way back in 1979.

Inside, Sony has added some modern hardware with the headphone – while the headphones stick to the original 23 mm driver units, you’re also getting plug-and-play USB-C connectivity, alongside a built-in microphone and an in-line remote for calls and media control. One thing to note is that the headphones do not come with a built-in battery, as they are a strictly wired affair.

Priced at $59.99, the MDR-3R headphones retain the original lightweight, open-ear design, and even come with interchangeable blue and orange ear pads, vintage packaging, and instruction manuals styled after the era.

Alongside the standard model, Sony is also launching an MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition, which features an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black ear pads, and custom thematic packaging.
