Google is working on a Gmail upgrade that would let its Gemini AI start on your to-do list for you, according to a new report.
If your inbox is packed with emails you keep meaning to deal with, this is aimed at you. Gmail already lists the messages that need action. The new feature would let Gemini begin the work, then check with you before it sends anything or calls a job done.
That matters because the biggest worry with AI helpers is that they act without asking. Here, Gemini would wait for your OK first, according to the report.
How the Gmail tasks would work
We spotted the feature after a post on X by tipster Abhishek Yadav. The site then dug through the code in the latest Gmail app for Android and found labels that show how it could work.
It builds on AI Inbox, a Gmail tab that picks out emails needing action and lists them as to-dos. Each suggested to-do would get a “Start with Gemini” button. Tap it, and Gemini gets to work while the task shows an “In progress” label.
If Gemini needs more details, the task would read “Needs your input,” with a “Give input” button. When Gemini finishes, the task would show “Ready for review,” so you can see what it did and approve or reject any changes. Jobs that need a reply would also offer a “Draft Reply” option.
AI Inbox is still in testing and, for now, requires a paid Google AI plan in the US.
