Android continues to proliferate as the smartphone market grows. The smartphone market grew 64% in Q2 compared to last year and all indications point to sustained growth. All major companies are experiencing growths in the numbers of shipped smartphones.

But it's Android that takes the cake - year-on-year basis it grew an astonishing 886% in the second quarter. Smartphone market grew 41% in the US with 14.7 million units shipped. Android devices accounted for 34% of those shipments. Almost a quarter of smartphones shipped worldwide are in the US, which retains its position as the biggest market for those devices.

Android is also doing well in China (which is the world's second largest smartphone market). From almost no shipments an year ago, in Q2 2010 Android grabbed a 7% market share in China - 475 thousand units shipped. China's home-brewed OMS platform (Open Mobile System) a.k.a. OPhone, which is based on Android, managed 174 thousand units too and should continue to grow.

Nokia remains the world leader in smartphone shipments with a record 23.8 million units shipped for a 41% growth year-on-year. It's currently enjoying a 38% market share thanks to affordable smartphones like the Nokia 5230.

Estimates put RIM in second place with 18% market share and strong positions in North and South America with the BlackBerry Curve 8520 pointed out as a strong seller. Apple slots in third position with a 13% market share for Q2. Their shipments were unaffected by all launch issues with the iPhone 4 and grew up to 61%.

Nokia N8 is coming soon. Apparently, the phone will start selling at the end of August in the UK and maybe even sooner in Spain. In the meantime, the Samsung Galaxy S is getting a white paint job.

Who saw that coming? A white color version of the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S! And you thought that a Froyo update would be the only intriguing news involving the Galaxy S that could surface? You'd better think twice. We've just noticed the image of the upcoming device on the website of the Spanish chain store The Phone House.

Unfortunately, the photo is too small to get any impression of the phone but according to the company, the device should start selling soon so it is only a matter of time for larger images to start surfacing.

Right next to the white Samsung Galaxy S we found the Nokia N8 (priced at 499 euro, ouch!) which, just like the I9000, will start shipping soon. The last time we heard of the N8 was when it appeared on the Italian website of Nokia. It informed us that the device is about to head for the stores sometime by the end of September but as it turns out now we may see it way sooner.

LG may seem all focused on the Korean market lately but today it showed that it hasn't forgotten about the rest of the world either. The company released a whole new series of touch-operated mobile phones, called Wink. The LG T300 Wink, T310 Wink style and T320 Wink 3G are all mid-range handsets with a distinct youthful appeal.

As the naming suggests, the LG T300 Wink is the most basic of the trio. It offers a 2.4" touchscreen (of QVGA resolution, presumably) and a body resembling the good old LG KP500 Cookie. The T300 Wink also sports a 3.5-inch headphone jack, FM radio and a microSD slot (those three features are common for the whole series).

Next comes the LG T310 Wink Style, which upgrades the display size to 2.8-inch. The Wink Style obviously has distinct design as one of its key assets and will come in a variety of bright colors.

Lastly we take a look at the LG T320 Wink 3G. It doesn't take a genius to understand that UMTS is the best it can put on the table. LG didn't even mention HSDPA so don't get your hopes too high.

Another couple has just joined the happy family of rooted Android-powered devices. Guys, say Hi to the rooted Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and its QWERTY-fied twin, the X10 mini pro.

SE X10mini

I have some great news to share with you: it only takes some clicks and a few minutes to root your tiny little Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini. By the way, the so called Exploid method will grant root access to X10 mini pro users as well.
Rooting gives you access to all system files and allows you to remove useless preloaded applications, to change boot images or to use themes, to move apps and cache to the SD card, to enable tethering and, of course, to run apps requiring root. And so much more.
There are only a few steps you have to go through but make sure you understand what you're reading and most importantly - what you're actually doing. After all, you might end up with a bricked device in your hands. This will also probably void your warranty as well.
