Google Brings Real-Time AI Avatars with its Latest Gemini 3.8 Update

It’s been a busy week for Google – the company has announced several incoming updates for a number of services, which covers everything from health-tracking features, all the way to online AI avatars. Speaking of the latter, Google confirmed that it’s launched Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar in Gemini Enterprise, which introduces a visual presence to its conversational AI models.

Building on the previous week’s Gemini 3.8 Live release, the new feature pairs low-latency streaming video generation with speech to create a dynamic virtual persona that can listen, see, and speak simultaneously.

Google says that Live Avatar is designed for enterprise applications such as customer service and interactive walkthroughs, and even features precise lip-syncing, natural facial expressions, and fluid turn-taking. The system is able to process visual and audio inputs at the same time to mimic natural human interaction.

To handle complex operations, the feature supports “asynchronous tool execution” – this essentially lets the AI fetch data and trigger background tasks while maintaining an uninterrupted conversation. It also includes support for multilingual speech-to-speech synchronization, and switches across 97 different languages mid-conversation while adapting its lip movements and expressions.

Google adds that organizations using the feature can access pre-made avatars or build their own from a high-quality reference image to match specific brand identities, although custom creation is currently restricted to enterprise usage. For security and transparency, all audio and video outputs are embedded with SynthID watermarks to ensure that AI-generated content remains detectable.
