GIF Support Comes to the Always-On Display

Do you like the Always-On Display? Or do you keep it off to save battery? Whatever your answer is, you will have to admit that it’s one of the better appeals of Samsung’s AMOLED displays and higher-end smartphones, but it’s about to get even better because the AOD will now support GIF images!

If you have a Galaxy S8/S8+/S9/S9+/Note 8 updated to the latest version, then this feature should be available to you right now. Go into the gallery and open a GIF. Now, touch the three dots to bring up the menu, where you should select “Set as Always on Display image” and you are done.

There are a few things that you should know about the feature though and they are as follows.

  • .webp format is not supported, although it is becoming the new standard
  • Only GIF images are supported as far as moving images on the AOD is concerned
  • You will see the animation only once per lock and unlock
