Playing games got worse for some Pixels on Android 17

Android updates are supposed to make your phone feel newer, not older. That’s not how it’s gone for everyone who installed Android 17. Some Pixel owners are running into an Android 17 games bug where titles that worked fine before the update now stutter and freeze mid-play.

One Pixel 10 Pro owner posted on Reddit that several games they’d played without issue started stuttering days after the update, even after multiple restarts. A Pixel 8 owner reported something similar, saying games began freezing during fast motion scenes, with the whole phone feeling noticeably sluggish since upgrading. MobilePhone Cases

This isn’t limited to one device either. The reports span Google’s newest Pixel 10 Pro and older phones like the Pixel 8. That spread suggests it’s not tied to a single chip generation.

Why This Bug Stands Out

Android 17 wasn’t supposed to make gaming worse, which is what makes this Android 17 games bug so strange. Google built a new system called DeliQueue specifically to cut down on dropped frames. The update also came with memory changes meant to smooth out high-definition gaming.

This isn’t the first bug this rollout’s produced either. Android 17 has also been breaking some Pixel touchscreens since it launched, just weeks after Google first rolled the update out to Pixel devices. Google hasn’t said anything specific about this Android 17 games bug yet.

Not every Pixel owner is running into this. But if your games have felt off lately, you’re not imagining it.
