Samsung and Microsoft

Microsoft and Samsung have announced a cross-patenting deal that will see the Korean firm pay royalties for every Android smartphone and tablet it sells, as well as greater collaboration on Windows Phone devices. The license agreement which Microsoft describes as evidence of a clear path forward for Google and others who have complained of the impact of patents on Android development means that Microsoft collects cash from two of the largest Android device producers around.

“Together with the license agreement signed last year with HTC, today’s agreement with Samsung means that the top two Android handset manufacturers in the United States have now acquired licenses to Microsoft’s patent portfolio. These two companies together accounted for more than half of all Android phones sold in the U.S. over the past year. That leaves Motorola Mobility, with which Microsoft is currently in litigation, as the only major Android smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. without a license” Brad Smith & Horacio Gutierrez, General Counsel & Deputy General Counsel, Microsoft

We have some good news for those in the US that plan on purchasing an HTC Sensation 4G. The manufacturer of the Android smartphone just got its request to make hardware changes to the Sensation approved by the HTC.

The request involves pushing up the CPU speed to 1.5GHz and replacing the battery with a bigger one. We already knew that the bigger battery that ships with the Beats-loving Sensation XE is compatible with the original Sensation, but we thought that the only way to get it is to purchase it as an accessory.

Anyway, HTC is obviously going to bring the US Sensation on par with the Sensation XE in terms of battery life and performance. Now, if only they would release a firmware update with the Beats audio tweaks, the difference between the two devices will boil down to the headset supplied in the retail package.

The Motorola Xoom 2 tablet will, by the looks of it, be offered in two size versions the 10.1-inch and a 8.2-inch one. Both devices seem to sport an iPhone-esque 9.3 mm thickness, which is not the best in tablet land but is still considered thinner than average.

Both slates are running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb and should sport dual-core processors and are very buggy at this stage so we could be in for a long wait. Still we may see them on the market for the holiday season.

LG has just officially unveiled its Korea-bound Optimus EX smartphone. We first met with the Android-running handset last week, when we got an official photo and detailed specs ahead of teh launch, so there are no surprises now.

The LG Optimus EX runs on Gingerbread and relies on a Tegra 2 chipset with a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and 1GB of RAM to do the math. The 4-inch WVGA screen on top will be of the NOVA variety, which promises one of the highest brightness levels on the market.

At the back there is a 5 megapixel camera that does 1080p video recording, while on the front is a VGA camera for video-chatting. The included storage is relatively modest at 8GB, but the microSD slot lets you expand that as much as you like.

Thats 50 million people that registered in the 88 days since the network launched. A really impressive achievement, considering that Google+ was invite-only since last week. The panels in question are manufactured by Wintek and are allegedly suffering from a "delayed bubble" issue which becomes apparent only later during the in the process of assembly. Since Wintek is delivering about 20-25% of the touch panels for the next iPhone, the supply shortages should not be too dramatic, but that also depends on how the other suppliers are doing.

Carbyn is the product of a Canadian startup company going by the same name, which debuted its new HTML 5.0-based OS at Tech Crunch Disrupt event this year.

The platform is designed to run on any modern browser, assuming it has HTML 5.0 support so thats pretty much everything bar some of the older builds of IE. It works by simply logging onto the Carbyn website and everything there, ready and up to date. You can pin apps to the homescreen like many conventional OS and as there is an SDK already available, developers can make apps from the ground up or for the platform or get existing apps working on it within half an hours, say the Carbyn team.

gsmarena 002 Carbyn: The HTML 5.0 based multi platform OS that runs in your browser [VIDEO]

The obvious comparison here is to the Chrome Web Store with its HTML 5.0 focused apps. The store is just a catalog of apps though, whereas Carbyn does not only runs multiple apps in individual browser windows, but it can apparently manage multitasking more efficiently as the apps can talk to each other, apparently something traditional web apps cannot.

Samsung vs. Apple

I wonder if anybody reads these articles and thinks "Wow, I am honestly shocked!" anymore. Yes, Samsung is adding even more lawsuits against Apple to its list.

This news comes just ten days after we reported the previous suit. The main goal is to ban Apple from selling iOS devices in the Netherlands, particularly the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and iPad 2.

The complaints are regarding the 3G technologies in Apple products. Since these are standard in mobile phones throughout the world, I am curious to find out why Samsung is suing just Apple. Again. Well, its probably because Apple is going after Samsung in courts at every turn too.

We saw the Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT at the unveiling event recently, and while we had a little bit of time with it, we really could not get a feel for the device since it was tethered and tied down. Now that we have our review unit in tow, we have been able to spend a little more time with the device and can give you more thorough initial impressions. Oh yeah, and a photo gallery.

Galaxy S II

The Galaxy S II is a pretty good Android device as far as high-end Android smartphones go. Immediately you will notice that its very thin and lightweight, but its size and lack of heft also give you a bit of the feeling that you are not holding a quality-made smartphone. Samsung tends to go heavy on the plastics with its smartphones, and the Galaxy S II for AT&T is no exception. But those few gripes aside, its a good handset.

Google Googles

Google Goggles has always been a great testament to how useful smartphones are. Advertised features include the ability take a photo of a French menu and have it instantly translate to English, or search something simply by taking a photo of it.

Recently, Google pushed out an update to Google Goggles on Android, adding some interesting new features in the process. Should you opt in, Google Goggles can automatically analyse all photos taken in your phone camera app in the background, without you needing to specifically tell the app to do so. It looks very interesting, to say the least.

How Google Goggles Works?

You may be familiar with Android Voice Actions, which allow you to search Google by saying aloud what you would like to find. Google Goggles effectively performs the same service for images; it can find web pages that contain the image, or extract the text from a photograph.

There are a number of scenarios in which this can be useful. Imagine recieving a business card and wanting to send an email to its sender, Google Goggles can read the text and offer up the email address. Likewise, heading to France and recieving a menu thats illegible to you can easily be solved by pulling out you smartphone, photographing it and having Google Translate translate it into your native tongue.

Translating menus is one awesome use for Google Goggles.

Enhancements With v1.6

The 1.6 update brings some nice, convenient and useful updates to the app. The main addition is automatic analysing within the stock camera app. Now, if you opt in to the service, Google Goggles will automatically start analysing your images in the background. If they find a match, you will be notified in your phone notification tray.

"With this new opt-in feature in Goggles, you can simply photograph an image using your phone’s camera, and Goggles will work in the background to analyze your image. If your photo contains items that Goggles can recognize, the app will notify you."

The feature is disabled by default, and must be turned on in the app settings under "Search by Camera". This is likely because Google Goggles uses data on each query, around 100kB per image, potentially meaning capture-happy users will eat up their data fast. You can limit it to just querying whilst on a WiFi network, but I cannot help but think this distracts from the whole point of instaneous searches. The main use of Goggles is when you’re out and about, generally when you’re not on a WiFi network.

A Google Goggles update appearing in the notifications tray.

Scenarios

So when would you use the Search by Camera feature?

Imagine going to a bookstore and wanting to essentially "bookmark" a book to look up prices online. With Goggles, you can just take a photo of the book with the regular old camera and then check the queries out when they are done.

Alternatively, think about going to an art gallery and wanting to research some of the paintings later, when you get home. All you have got to do is pull out your camera and snap some shots and let Goggles work in the background.

source code

Under layers of source code, the fate of Apple products has been discovered. Right now the fastest processor in an iOS device is Apple 1 GHz dual-core A5 chip, which is found in the iPad 2. The company is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 soon on October 4th with that same processor.

Ars Technica got the scoop from a developer pointing out that what initially looks like random letters and numbers in Xcode actually hints at support for quad-core devices:

"A developer who works on low-level ARM assembly coding for security products was the first to alert Ars that support had been added for Armada's Cortex A9-compatible processors in the latest version of Xcode (a claim that we later confirmed first-hand). The source code for a part of Clang that interprets what CPU type is being targeted for optimization includes a definition for an architecture type of "armv7k" and CPU type pj4b."

Google sim card

There is some potentially huge news popping up out of Spain, as reports suggest that Google is doling out its own SIM cards to employees in what could be the first step to it launching its own carrier in the country.

Technically, this would be what is known as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator or an MVNO, as Google would likely purchase airtime from a carrier at a wholesale rate and then resell it under its own branding. We have seen this model burn out in the United States, as Disney, ESPN, Helio and Virgin Mobile all tried the MVNO game before either dying or selling to a major carrier.

Unsurprisingly, Apple topped the charts here with 89% retention rate. Thats impressively high, but its a bit down from what it was a year and a half ago Apple used to have a whopping 95% retention rate in 2010. Retention rates are down all around, say UBS. HTC managed to sneak into second place with 39% after RIM fell to 33%. Samsung and Motorola come in fourth and fifth with 28% and 25% respectively, followed by Nokia with 22%.

OpenMobile ACL should now be your go-to for apps on your MeeGo device. ACL stands for Application Compatibility Layer and it leverages both the runtime environment and the Dalvik Virtual Machine used by Android to allow support for 100% of the Android Market apps.

The video below shows a demonstration of the ACL running an x86 MeeGo tablet, laden with Android apps. We get previews of Facebook, running without issue and even a bit of 3D gaming in the form of Guitar Hero 5.

Everything looks smooth and really looks like a completely viable solution to bring a fleshed out app ecosystem to the MeeGo platform. There is also no issue running Android and MeeGo apps side-by-side, so cross-platform multitasking is a go too.

Skype users have started receiving emails about GroupMe, which is the "newest member of the Skype family." As you may know, Skypeacquired the popular group messaging service in August for $85 million, which is not that bad for a 16-month old company.

GroupMe provides users with an easy way to chat with people and groups while on the go. The application is available across many popular smartphone platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone. Heck, it can even work via SMS, since every GroupMe user gets a special phone number to use for messaging only.

Atrix 2

The next version of the Motorola Atrix, aka. the Edison, has been spotted once again and we are not talking about some blurry shots here but a full blown hands-on by the folks at The Verge, well before the official announcement.

The most noticable change from the older model is the design and at least to our eyes it looks a hell of a lot better. It also looks thinner and taller than before.

Atrix 2

Other major change being reported is that the display no longer uses the PenTile matrix layout of the Atrix display, opting for the superior and commonly used RGB layout. The display size and resolution remains the same at 4.3-inch and QHD respectively.

Testing the service

In a sad/brilliant way FakeGirlfriend.com has just unveiled a web service which will let you receive texts and calls from a fake girlfriend to impress all your friends who are probably totally cool and get laid all the time and stuff.

Its built off the Twilio backend, which makes it simple for app developers of all sorts to integrate SMS and voice into apps. With this service, you simply save (212) 804-6979 under your "girlfriend" name, shoot a text to it when you are out and about and a text message will hit your phone with a "girlfriend-esque message" A short time later, your phone will ring with a pre-recorded message, so you can have an excuse from your cool bros who are probably playing beer pong with popped collars.

gsmarena 001 Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY gets 720p video recording, automatic display brightness adjustment

The headline may come as a shock to some but its true. It seems in an effort to make a great gaming phone, Sony Ericsson forgot to add some basic features in the Xperia PLAY that are expected in a phone that costs as much as it does.

Thankfully, the error has been corrected and after the latest firmware update, the Xperia PLAY is now capable of recording videos in 720p resolution, that too with continuous auto-focus. You will also be able to get the option toggle the automatic display brightness option from the settings menu. Interestingly, this second option is absent from the latest 2.3.4 update on both the Xperia arc as well as the Xperia neo.

Arc S

No News about Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S coming to stores, we have spotted it on one online retailer website and will spread soon to more retailers and websites.

The Arc S is an Updated version of Sony Ericsson Arc. The key difference being the improved 1.4GHz processor. Beyond that the S is effectively the same device but that is not a bad thing.

Highlights include the top-notch 4.2" LCD with Sony BRAVIA engine to really make it pop. There is 512MB of RAM, an 8MP camera capable of 720p HD video at 30fps with continuous auto-focus and a new 3D sweep panorama mode, a feature previously reserved for the likes of Sony Cybershot cameras like the TX-9. The most impressive thing about the sweep being that it creates a 3D image using the S single lens camera.

gsmarena 001 HTC and Dropbox team up to offer HTC customers 5GB of cloud storage

Dropbox has become a popular third-party solution for cloud storage and file management, allowing users to sync files between specialized folders, across OS and more recently mobile platforms.

Currently the service is available in mobile form for iOS, blackberry and Android users, but this recent partnership looks to sweeten the deal for those running the latest HTC kit. What is meant by that is HTC users looking to benefit from the new partnership will have to be running a device that uses HTC Sense 3.5 UI or higher, devices such as the newly announced HTC Rhyme.

Providing you fit the bill, an HTC-friendly Dropbox will garner a further free 3GB of storage, on top of the standard 2GB that all typical users get, giving a total of 5GB of syncable goodness. What is more, share the service with your friends and improve your online storage capability to a maximum of 10GB which, believe me comes in handy.

GetGlue and Miso are popular applications that allow you to share what movies or TV you are watching or music you are listening to. For the most part, these applications work great and there is a nice community behind them. In all likelihood, these users probably use facebook and the new ability to tell friends that they are watching TV, etc within Facebook may keep these users from going into apps GetGlue.

Samsung leaked document

There is a device (Nexus prime is highly expected) thats rumored to be coming out in the near future called the Samsung SHV-E120L. It was first spotted as an entry in a database of the NenaMark benchmarking tool in late August, and now today its been found in a South Korean online forum.

According to the poster the Model Name "SHV-E120L" is going to pack a 4.7 inch 720p display, a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm processor with an Adreno 220 GPU, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, 8 megapixel rear facing camera, 2 megapixel forward facing camera, LTE support, and a massive 1850 mAh battery. According to a Greek website an iPhone will be announced in early October and released to the major markets around the world on October 21. The site claims this will be the iPhone 4S with the same size display, 8 MP camera with 1080p video recording, a dual-core 1GHz A5 processor inside and a second antenna on the top.

The rest of the specs are pretty much identical to the current iPhone 4. The site claims to have a "100% reliable source", but we do advise you to take it with a pinch of salt.

We also received another tip, claiming that the next iPhone will feature BlackBerry Messenger service. According to the tipster, BlackBerry will be getting a lot of cash in return for their messaging service. Once again there is no confirmation of any kind to those rumors, so it might all end up to be science fiction.

You can see where you have been, based on your Facebook Places check-ins. Apps can plug into Timeline too, and reports can summarize your monthly activity. Facebook angle for the service is that this is the new equivalent of having a long conversation with someone, while the first generation of Facebook was the introduction, and the last was the first 15 minutes of casual chatting.

court of law

Rumors around saying that Samsung is getting ready to block sales of the iPhone 5 in Europe, though they have not quite settled in which countries they will be launching legal action. South Korea is a natural choice, but Europe is apparently in discussions, and would put a significantly larger wrench into Apple plans. While that seems a little pre-emptive, you cannot blame them for being on the offensive after Apple blocked the Tab in Australia and Germany.

The nature of what Samsung complaints might be still are not clear, but I am sure they will be able to to find something. Samsung actually demanded to see the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 in courts awhile back to ensure Apple was not stepping on any of their technology, but to no avail.

gsmarena 002 NVIDIAs Kal El quad core chipset promises great power efficiency thanks to an extra core

NVIDIA Kal-El has a secret the quad-core CPU actually has a fifth core, called a companion core. Its a low-power core that is meant to handle background tasks while the phone is idle.

The architecture of the companion core has been designed with power efficiency in mind and its clock speed goes up to 500MHz.That does not offer a lot of performance, but for a lot of tasks you do not need it and it manages to offer great power savings.

When you need more processing power, the companion core switches off and the fast cores come out either one, two or all four of them, depending on how much processing power you need.

gsmarena 001 NVIDIAs Kal El quad core chipset promises great power efficiency thanks to an extra core

The switching between the different modes is handled by the chipset, so there is no need for modifications to the OS or individual apps that should make it really easy for manufacturers to switch to the Kal-El platform.

gsmarena 001 Windows 8 secure boot to make dual booting difficult, Linux users grimace

If you like to run your favorite Linux distribution alongside a copy of Windows on the same machine then you might want to stay away from Windows 8 computers. Thanks to a new secure boot in Windows 8, dual-booting might just become a thing of the past.

Now before I begin explaining, let me say that this will affect only those devices with a Designed for Windows 8 logo on them, so you can still install Windows 8 on your current computer and dual-boot it. The reason it woill not work on these branded computers is because of the UEFI or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface that these machines will be having instead of a traditional BIOS.

The UEFI requires a signing key installed on the firmware from the software maker or the OEM before booting into the OS. This makes it harder for malware to initiate when the system is booting. Unfortunately, this also means that an unsigned copy of Linux will not be able to run on a machine with such a firmware.

Skype for iOS

iOS users should watch out next time they decide to take up a conversation via Skype, they could be exposing themselves to a pretty fundamental security hole.

The vulnerability can easily be used to steal content direct from an iOS Skype user during a normal chat log and the victim is none the wiser during the attack. By utilizing the correct JavaScript commands in the attackers username and then sending the victim a message, the script can instruct whatever iOS device is on the receiving end to transfer data back to the attacker.

The attack can only work if the potential victim is using the latest version of Skype for iOS, but providing they are, their address book simply copies to a web server in a single file, easy for download.

The iPad 2 sports the A5 processor, so its just a matter of time until that finds its way into the iPhone. This dual-core chip should give the iPhone 5 some major horsepower which app developers will be able to take advantage of.

Orange France will be getting the NFC-enabled Galaxy S II first that would happen some time next month and there is a chance that the handset will be called I9101 Galaxy S II. After France the NFC Galaxy S II will be hitting other countries, but there's no official timetable for that.

NFC aside, there will be no changes to the S II specs that means 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 4.3" SuperAMOLED Plus screen, 8MP camera and so on.

LG

Street Fighter is coming to Android, thanks to a collaboration between LG and CAPCOM. LG CEO took the time to "HD" four times in four sentences, underlining "HD smartphone".

Street Fighter IV will come to Android in the last quarter of this year and be exclusive to the LG own app store (LG World) for the first three months of its droid existence. There was no mention of its pricing. Street Fighter IV is already available on iOS ($4.99), so the game coming to another mobile platform isn’t all that interesting.

Whats interesting is that LG CEO kept talking about HD and HD smartphones maybe we will see improved graphics over the iOS version and, more interestingly, see the game debut on a brand new smartphone.

Motorola Xoom

A blurry shot of an unannounced Motorola slate just surfaced. The super-slim tablet appears to be sporting a screen much smaller than that of the Xoom .

Its most probably measuring 7 or 8 inches in diagonal. The upcomming Motorola slate is running Android Honeycomb as you can see the Honeycomb camera app running if you look really carefully.

iPad

For months now, predictions of an early iPad 3 release have swirled around the internet, suggesting a thinner and more efficient battery life than the iPad 2. But in the latest research update from J.P.

Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz, came yet another new iPad prediction: no iPad 3 until 2012. Moskowitz writes:

"In our view, Apple should be in no rush. The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012. MMI and RIM have been recent disappointments, and we expect more stumbles from others."

gsmarena 001 Two iPhones coming this Fall, JP Morgan says

According to a proprietary JP Morgan research, Apple will release not one but two smartphones this Fall, showing a China-oriented iPhone 4+ alongside the iPhone 5. Also, the next generation iPhone 5 with might not use the A5 chipset thats powering the iPad 2, but the newly developed A6 SoC.

The report says that the new thinner, lighter iPhone 5 will either pack the A6 CPU and 1GB RAM. To be honest, the A6 bit seems highly unlikely with the new chipset still far from ready for mass production.

Whats more interesting is the rumor that Apple will be releasing an iPhone 4+, which is a slightly improved version of the iPhone 4, alongside its new top dog. JP Morgan suggests that the iPhone 4+ or 4S will be designed with the Chinese market in mind. Availability of the 4+ will not be limited to the Asian country.

A6

According to DigiTimes, one of our favorite rumor sites since they have an above average track record when it comes to getting things right, Apple has just signed a deal with TSMC to manufacture the as yet to be announced A6 and A7 processors that will end up in future generations of iOS products. The rumor goes on the say that the A6 will be built using a 28 nanometer process and that the A7 will be using a 20 nanometer process.

In other words, future Apple chips will be smaller and use up less power, therefore giving you longer battery life. The A5 thats currently in the iPad 2 and will no doubt end up in the next generation iPhone is built on a 45 nanometer process.
